I have recently started getting a lift to work from a colleague, and want to give him petrol money, as I think it's the decent thing to do.

He doesn't drive any extra to pick me up or drop me off, and he doesn't leave any earlier. As far as I can see he's not being inconvenienced in anyway by helping me out.

With this is mind, what sort of petrol money would you guys consider reasonable?

You can offer him money, but he would most likey say No because he lives so close..

Try offering him a drink when you guys out next, or something along those lines

We travel about 40 miles in total every day he gives me a lift. . . though as I say those are 40 miles he would drive regardless of my being in the car too.

You being in the car adds weight and hence his car will use slightly more petrol regardless. Even if you pay £5 a week its the gesture that matters and Im sure the driver will appreciate it in this current climate, else take public transport and travel without aircon, radio, comfort.

How much would it cost you to get to and from work without him?

Give him half of this, although if he takes any more than the running costs off you he is in theory carrying passengers for hire or reward which invalidates his insurance.

£40 sounds reasonable, it would cover the cost of a monthly bus pass round here last time I looked (about 3 years ago mind) and you're getting lifts door to door so everyone's a winner. :)

As stated, it's nothing to do with it not costing him anymore, it's the fact he is giving you a lift. So sure, £10/week sounds great. It's saving you money and it's saving him money, it's a favour.
