Petrol or Diesel?

Ignoring the arguments about bmw, i currently drive a diesel. I bought it when i was driving all over the place with work doing 30k miles a year, since changing jobs i only do around <10k a year, half of it sitting in traffic or in towns. The fuel economy for my 10mile commute to work struggles to get past 36mpg even with delicate driving. Its only on the long haul journeys that you start to see the 50+mpg marks. Since my driving distances arent going to change im changing to petrol in Feb when my current lease is up. Same rough economy (slightly worse i reckon) but cheaper to fill, plus the added joy of an extra 3000rpm :) I will miss the in gear acceleration, but then again, theres always the option of downshifting.

Edit - My turbo has also only recently exploded (and i dont hoon everywhere), just outside of the 3yr warranty. If i wasn't on a fully maintained lease that would have cost me a bucket.

I was going to say, it sounds a bit like having a turbo.

I'll stop now as there are a lot of Civic owners on here, and it's not a bad car, just doesn't fit my driving style.

Isn't lag the time it takes to come into boost?

It is the delay between accelerator depression and the time at which the boost is felt, hence "lag" in terms of the laggy throttle response you get on most turbocharged cars.

It doesnt refer to the fact that you wouldnt find that it would spool below a certain rpm ala the vtec comparison..

No as Jez said, what you have described is boost threshold. Lag is if you drove down the road and the engine was on boost, if you took your foot off the accelerator and then put your foot back on the accelerator then lag is the time the turbo takes to spin back up to speed after slowing down because you took your foot off the pedal. What you get is a small delay in throttle response.

Went out today for more test driving.

Sadly the Leon I had booked was sold earlier in the week so i'm going to have to wait to get a go in another one.

Now, the Fabia vRS.

It's er... torquey. Just a smidge. And it goes like absolute stink. The mid-range acceleration is absolutely brutal, like being smacked in the face with a brick.

The total opposite of the Focus for me. The Focus is a far more comfortable car for driving in, but it feels sluggish compared to the vRS. The Fabia is a very raw drive, foot down and off it goes, torque spilling all over the road.

Not sure which I prefer, but the vRS is a brilliant car, oodles of torque, good fuel economy, and the one I drove is fully specced and looks as good as the Focus from the outside.

But the Focus is a much more refined car, more comfortable to drive, but certainly less involving as a result.

Going to be a tough choice, this.

Okay, i'm done, the petrol lovers can begin bashing me now. :p

I really think you need to drive a few more cars because this really isnt what a Fabia diesel is like.

This is what a lot of diesel opinions seem to be like, people with average diesel cars thinking they offer the performance of some sort of supercar because until they bought the diesel they drove a 1.6 petrol and now the turbo kicking in makes them think they almost drive a Ferrari. It's a lack of context, IMHO.

I would quite rightly be laughed out of the forum if I described the acceleration of my car, for example, as 'absolutely brutal'.

Well lets see, my comparison is.

Fabia 1.9TDI
Golf 1.6
Ibiza 1.4
Focus 1.8

It's purely subjective really. I know it won't match a supercar, hell there are a lot of things that would make the Fabia look ordinary.

But to me, it feels brutal. :)

But of course a Fabia VRS would seem brutal compared to a Focus 1.8? Surely a 2.0 would be a fairer comparison with the 1.8 being useless in terms of perfromance?

A 130BHP car is NEVER going to be brutal. It's just those extra diesel Torks.
