petrol prices

What a joke! 51p a liter and they are kicking off.. they wanna live here!

No, you want to try and look at the effects of a large percentage rise of something essential. Their economy is built on lower cost fuel, ours is not, therefore a rise of 50% hits them hard despite the fact its still lower than ours - the high levels of taxation insulate us from the effects of rising prices to a much greater extent than the USA.

I'lll say it again - debating this sort of thing with people who cannot be bothered to learn how it works can get very tedious.

i had to pay £1.12 a litre this morning to fill :(

guy down the pub has put a bet on petrol reaching £6 a gallon before xmas  25/1 apparently.

how much is it at the moment??

While I agree with what you are saying, the US isnt like a country like Venezuela. The US and UK have comparable costs of living / life styles so a large percentage rise looks terrible but shouldnt hit their pockets that hard. In a country like Venezuela where fuel is dirt cheap, large percentage rises will hit badly because their country is so poor.

Ex Tory Chancellor gordon Lamont has a lot to answer for with his infamous 'fuel tax escalator' which automatically raised tax every year.

The major change in petrol taxation came under the Conservatives in 1993 with the introduction of the Fuel Price Escalator.

The escalator was designed as a means both to raise money and discourage car use on environmental grounds.

At the time, British fuel was the third-cheapest in Europe. It is now the most expensive.

The annual fuel escalator was set in 1993 at 3% above the rate of inflation.

On its introduction it added three pence to a litre of fuel and raised the tax burden on unleaded petrol to 72.8% of the total cost.

When the Conservatives left office in 1997, the escalator was at 5% and had contributed a 11.1 pence rise to the cost of unleaded fuel. Tax as a proportion of total cost stood at 76.3%.

Just filled the commuter hack bike up. £20 with the trip meter reading 238 miles. 60mpg ish.
To go the same distance in the Lexus costs me £70.

Biking it from now on. I just don't see the point in spending the money.

Why are so many people obsessed with saving 1p? Massive queues at the Chelford Shell which is 1p cheaper than the Shell in Macclesfield, 2p cheaper than the BP at Monk's Heath. All on the way to the M6 so no extra travel involved. The money you save is wasted sitting there.

Ive written to my local MP,and to Gordon Brown I'm in the motor industry and it's not so much hurting me [being in the panel beating game],but some of my closest friends are hauliers and there fuel costs have gone up 4 grand a week,in the last 18 months. We are actively planning protests here in the North East........I'm not going to say what or where in case anyone 'official' is here but yes we are active! so i am off my backside mr fox.......

But their economy is geared around lower fuel prices, as are their cars, distances between shops and housing, etc.

Guess you're right as it is a much bigger country so loads more miles to travel to work etc as you say.

When I first moved to the States petrol was $1.95 a gallon meaning it cost me $30-35 to fill up my tank (and this is a 4x4 lol). The price has been steadily going up and up since then and just yesterday it hit $3.75 a gallon - nearly doubling in price in just over a year is pretty dam unreasonable if you ask me! People over here are pretty freaked out and royally ***** off about it all, especially since a lot of cars are not that great on mpg - diesel is pretty unheard of here!

This is how the petrol price trend tends to go and were all suckers for falling for it.

They bump the prices up until everyone gets hysterical then knock them down a bit to calm people. Then jack them up again, and repeat.

omg £1.60 a gallon. Thats unreal. I hate this country.

Yeah, maybe in America people need to look at what they are driving or if they actually need to drive everywhere. (aimed at the numerous fat people getting their drive-thru's)
If fuel prices had doubled in price, I'd question driving a raft with a thirsty, highly inefficient engine.

lol that is so true, that is now becoming my official source for when I need to get a point across with fuel protests. :)
