Pets

Think you mean you say that as someone who is owned by 3 house rabbits! :p

What about the slightly bigger, and probably more self-confident, rodents like a Degu or Chinchilla?

Or a Budgie!! I loved my grandmothers Budgie and Cockatiels

1 definitely owns me. They're great and are fantastic little creatures but really are tying. Very susceptible to health issues, particularly linked to diet (for example lettuce really isn't good for them, nor are carrots!).

Chickens?

Chickens need significant start up resource, and space.
Great for kids. But need to know what you're getting into.

I love my chickens.

How about
Stick Insects?

Id echo some of the above. Get something you like. My sister had mice (yuck) and the interest lasted weeks, mum had to look after them. I had chickens and the interest is life long.

I’m nearly 40 and I’ve had hamsters all my life and I’ve never experienced any of the horror stories that other people on here have. Their short life span may turn out to be a bonus if your kids lose interest. We don’t have any kids in our house and Aston the hamster is still a real member of the family. Handle them as much as possible while they are still young and you can’t really go wrong, I’ve been bitten once ever and that was because I made one jump, remind the kids that hamsters are almost blind so if you shock them then you risk feeling the sharp end.

I had two Chinchillas, they are very destructive so if you like the woodwork in your house don’t get chinchillas. They are very sociable so you’d need more than one and they can live up to 20 years in captivity.

A friend had a pet goat, it was really old by the time it died.

He used to leave it on a long rope at the front of his house. It was fine unless you turned your back on it and then it would ram you up the arse lol

I have 2 Rabbits, don't get Rabbits, they're a really bad choice of pet for a kid. A Hamster is probably the best bet, just make sure you get it a decent cage so it isn't bored senseless when your kids lose interest after 2 weeks.

Stick Insects are dead easy

You can say that again. :D:D

At the end of the day the kids want what they want, get anything else and they'll be extremely disappointed and lose interest rapidly. Which they probably will anyway unless they're really into whatever it is they want. Otherwise its passing interest.

Tortoises do live a very long time it'll outlive you and possibly them given correct living conditions their needs are specialised and not for beginners I'd really try and put them off.

Personally I am a dog person, with 2 German Shepherds at the moment. They are big, powerful, intelligent and very friendly pets (Not so true a statement, for uninvited guests.) Granted they are a lot of work, with walking, training and inevitably vet bills.

Have you considered a brick?
Well, I'll just go and throw the suggestion out here, easy to walk, feed and most importantly have an impactful personality. :D https://imgur.com/gallery/KmQIq
