Peugeot DW8 engine - interference or not?

Just got the call, engine ran really badly for a second, won't restart.

Odds are the belt has let go, just wondering what it broke.

Is it a fixable interference (like the xud where you give it a fresh cam and a couple of followers and it's runs again) or is it terminal interference (as in it's a ****ing paperweight)?

(guess which ****head sold his spare xud n/a lump 2 months ago)

Cheers.

Might be salvageable. To be honest the XUDs are not any more or less repairable than any other engine (generally speaking) with cambelt failure. Just seems all the GTI6 guys CBA to change the cam belt on time and bodge it when it finally gives in due to cost of second hand blocks.

Afraid going to have to take the head of and see what condition the pistons/valves/valve guides/followers/cams are in.

Note that the compression ratio on those engines is stupidly high, so there is a good chance you've knackered quite a few valves/followers. But depends - might have died after 1 compression stroke. Might have have done 10 and taken the whole lot with it!

The XUD is great as the valves are flat on to the piston, if the belt break the just get shoved upwards and snap the cam & followers.

If the valves are angled onto the piston you get belt valves and a world of other hassles.

But i don't know if the DW8 has flat facing valves.

Not gonna be happening, if it's more than a mashed top end it's getting flatpacked.

Heh, hers is a non-turbo diesel, so the compression is even higher than normal!

The pistons have 2 conjoined circle imprints on the piston. Looks a bit like a man sack ;)

Although not sure how much difference it would make, again without seeing it with the head off!

To be honest I wouldn't sink any money into one of those engines with a cam belt failure (or any engine for that matter), you can pick them up for £100 from the breakers.

Depends if the impressions were flat or tappered.

The xud motors are ten a penny, try finding a dw8 lump without paying more than the car is worth though. :(

Couldn't tell you from memory!

Ring around you'd be surprised. Just put on ***** voice and ask for one from a van - You'll pay less :)

I know ebay are always overpriced but they range from 350 to 550

Sods law ours is a parts bin special. DW8 engine in a 306 body. DW8 lived in the 206 and other newer stuff, keeps the prices up.

Looks like i may be a lucky bugger :)

Got to look at the engine today (when the rain let up), the timing belt has teeth missing, it's slightly shredded on one side for a few inches and the pump pulley has teeth missing. Yes, you read that right, the injector pump pulley has been broken in two places!

Fearing the worst i took the rocker cover off and the cam is in one piece! It must have cut out the moment the timing went wrong. And it wouldn't restart as the battery terminal is dodgy (one of those damn stupid screw on connectors) meaning she couldn't spin it over and do any damage! :D

I've ordered a new pulley from the dealer, belt will be about £15, then put it back together and flog it (wife has lost faith in the car now).

Not quite the expensive new year we were dreading :D

The pump pulley has teeth missing??? That's a sintered steel casting!

Could it have been damaged/weakened when the cambelt was replaced perhaps?

The actual backing of the pulley is only 2mm thick though, looks very weedy next to the spares i have for other pumps.

Not changed the belt yet, but i was fiddling with trying to swap the pump a couple of weeks ago, i might have done something then. Can't believe how thin the metal is though, doesn't look stong enough to take the tension of the belt.

That's the plan, need to wait for the new pulley to arrive first, the old one isn't round anymore!

Hmm, think i've found the problem ...

Notice how the new unit is somewhat thicker than the original.

Got the new pulley on, got the new belt on, turned it over by hand, everything moving freely, now i need to sort the battery terminal so the bugger will turn over.

Sod it, job for next year :D

That's a shocking failure, that pully looks way too thin for my liking - and compared to the new one it does look like it has been modified by Peugeot to counter this problem.

Got out to it this morning, freshly charged battery on, started it 5/6 times (stopping it each time to tweak the pump timing), start number 7 was, "click click click".

Multimeter showing battery dropping to 10.5v with the glowplugs on and 5v when cranking. Fubar battery

Not to worry i've got a big assed high amperage transit battery at the workshop. Which is closed today.

And that's my day done

Swapped in the battery from my 406, mucho start/stop/tweak/start/etc and a few laps around the local roads and she's driven it to work this evening :)

Little bit of smoke when it starts up, but that clears once you pull away. (it is a 306 after all!)

Run it for a few days to make sure everything is behaving, then put it up for sale.

She's lost trust in the car.

Now it's had a full service, new aux belt, new cam belt, new pump pulley, she wants rid of it. ho hum.
