PG279Q buyer's regret

Looking for reassurance on my choice of purchasing this monitor at 4AM after a long nightshift...

Reading online, it seems there are a HUGE number of people unhappy with the bleed and QC of these. I'm already using a Crossover IPS from Korea which has barely any bleed and no dead pixels, however I got the Swift for around £50 off what most other places are selling it for.

What are the odds it's a turkey? Someone mentioned ASUS stepped up their QC recently?

It's pot-luck tbh. QC is non-existent on all monitors these days. I suspect anything that switches on with less than a dozen dead pixels gets a pass.

I assume your Crossover is the SIPS version with semi-glossy coating. You may be slightly disappointed as no gaming monitor can match the quality of that display imo. I miss mine (it fell to its death) and currently use an Acer XB270hu, same panel as the Asus.

Oh god, username checks out :(

I'll be keeping the Crossover as a second screen. As you say, it's absolutely beautiful. It's glossy on the front so colours are downright insane. Crossover will likely be used for productivity and the Swift for gaming.

I'll be furious if there are dead pixels :(

Send it back if so. "Doesn't meet expectations for quality given the price point" is a perfectly legit reason. In fact, the more people who return monitors for bad pixels and BLB, the more pressure we put on manufacturers to tighten up QC. It's gotten lax because so many people just put up with rubbish displays being sold as "premium" rather than demand an actual item of quality :(

Eh adding further doom and gloom my experience with the PG279Q hasn't been inspiring - it might be fixed now but everyone I know IRL that bought one on release has had issues with "scan lines" and while not as common as the PG278Q a couple of people have had the same kind of fuzzy text issues after a few months.

With these panels it is literally pot luck :( the Dell S2716DG is the only one in the high refresh G-Sync department which doesn't seem to have outright problems and a tiny bit better for quality control - still quite a bit of variation for BLB and some people getting 1-2 dead pixels though.

Yep, this is what I'm planning. I'm just worried I'll get jib from the seller on the Bay. Although they've got 70k feedback, you never know...

I've done quite a bit of research on that monitor and although it's not IPS, it seems to get good feedback. Think I'll grab one if the Swift is a turkey.

T'bay is packed with protection mechanisms for the buyer though. Worst case you send it back recorded delivery, can prove for a fact that they received it, and you'll get your refund one way or the other. It's not really worth sellers' times being arsey with you, especially if it's a storefront/brand new item. If anything, there's more cases of buyers ripping off sellers; returning a different (broken) unit and claiming a refund, etc.

Yeah, fair point. The item was brand new from a retailer with high feedback, so I guess it'll all work out fine. It's coming tomorrow, so I'll know pretty soon.

Yeah, you'll have no problems with proper storefront. They will be bound by the same distance sales regs as any other online vendor, which includes the buyer's option to find the product of unsatisfactory quality :)

(The mystery is why manufacturers and buyers have such wildly different perceptions about 'satisfactory quality'! Strange times.)

Also if it makes you feel better, I'm taking a panel lottery ticket myself right now too. Let's hope we both come up winners :)

Cool, that's reassuring. Let's see how it turns out. What monitor have you gone for out of interest?

I opted for an HP Omen 32 because it's at a good sale price right now, from a vendor with a good return policy :) I've been dithering over it for a while because it ticked a lot of my boxes, except colour accuracy - but I'm planning to replace my little 13" Cintiq with a 27" Dell Canvas next month, so that will become the all-round graphics screen and I won't need to use the main monitor to do colour proofing any more. Life's a lot simpler when you don't want a screen to be both professional and gaming :D

Wow, 13"?!

Just checked out the HP, seems pretty good. Comment back once you know whether you've won or lost the panel lottery!

Well it's a Cintiq - meant for drawing on rather than as a media screen, but it's not brilliant at colours either so I end up bouncing the image to my main monitor and back :/ Will let you know how it pans out. Delivery next Tuesday, I hope ^^

The biggest lottery is with ips panels.

TN and VA are much more consistent.

Only real different I've found is that IPS has the extra complexity of that yellow glow (and in some cases purple/green/inversion type effect which mostly isn't a problem with PC monitors as it tends to be more of an issue off orientation).

For a long time I've tried to have a good image quality monitor (usually IPS or PLS) and a higher response gaming monitor on my desk so as to have the best of both worlds and been through a lot of panels trying to find the ideal setup and I've had about the same level of variation in things like BLB, dead pixels and general quality control.

I've also built a lot of systems either as part of my job or for friends/family, etc. in my time and I've seen about the same there - about the same odds of getting a good or bad panel regardless of technology and slightly mitigated by brand.

So the Swift is here, sat on my desk. Absolutely beautiful... Like, Jesus Christ... Gorgeous. Panel is fanastic, no dead pixels and no noticeable backlight bleed. Small bit of IPS glow and a tiny tiny bit of yellowing in the top left, but jeeez it really is gorgeous!

Honestly, it's luck of the draw but really evaluate yourself if it's really unperfect.
First PG279Q i got had no prob, I had that on-the-day of release, I was probably the first "public" to physically have it in the UK.
Second one, that i ended up keeping has absolutely no problem at all.
Dont know if other people are just picky or they really got bad units
