So I'm considering upgrading from my current setup, though this is somewhat on hold given where prices sit.

But have started to come across these new connection standards, specifically aimed at GPU power delivery it seems. My current GPU (6900xt) just uses standard 3 X 8pin connectors.
Is there anything to these new connections or just another way to lock you in a specific ecosystem?

It would depend on the example you buy.

The board power boards/graphics would require each other, like Sapphire's version needs the card plus a Nitro board. The card also has normal power from the PSU, so you don't have to use the motherboard.

According to Sapphire, their version is compatible with other boards that support the standard, which originated with Asus.

Ok so you're not locked in with either the motherboard or the card I see. But is there anything to the wiring approach? I remember a few years ago there were anecdotes about the standard pin arrangement burning out the connectors on both Nvidia and AMD cards. Is this connection any better?

Are you referring to the nvidia-derived 16-pin connector, otherwise known as 12VHPWR or (newer) 12V-2x6?

I don't know if these board connectors are better, but the main issue for the 16-pin seems to be the pin contact (or lack of!), so in theory, I could see it being an improvement.

At least, there's no chance of the connector falling out by itself, and/or the load being unevenly distributed across the pins.

Would like to hear someone like der8auer or buildzoid's opinion on it.
