i just read about this new kind of memory yesterday and it strikes me that the uses are unlimited and could change the way computers are designed if implimented properly.

its non volitol, uses half the power of flash, has unlimited read/write and in its curent state is smaller than flash and has no problem going smaller, i cant fing the article i read about the speeds in but i believe iths transfer rates were 1gb.

so this is where i see the the whole computer layout changing. if u no longer need ram to fill the lag gap couldnt u just put this phase ram in sram's plase and eliminate the need for everything behind sram ? ide,sata controllers, hard drive ect ?

seems like a solid plan to me
 
Same thing is happening with hard disks, read an article a few weeks back on a 32Gb solid state disk that Samsung announced. The benchmarks just totally trammed over everything on the market, although the price is just too high for that technology but time will bring the price to affordable levels and it will become mainstream.

In the long run i think there will always be some form of performance seperation between the storage device, system memory and processor cache though. This is because the faster the memory, the more expensive it is so...

- Storage devices make the biggest sacrifice for speed as they require the biggest capacity.
- Memory makes a comprimise between speed and capacity to give a medium between cpu cache and storage.
- CPU cache makes the biggest sacrifice for capacity as maximum speed is needed.

Sorry for pointing the obvious out if you already knew all this which I expect you did ^_^
