Phenom 2 listed

Looking forward to the release of these CPU's.

Same, I'd love to go back to AMD; just hoping that these atleast beat the C2Qs and are not too far away from i7 :)

Then it's AM2+ + DRR2 (I dont see the point in shelling out on DDR3 as yet, not until prices fall WAAY down atleast):P

AMD Phenom II X4 940 : 350 USD = £300-350

I dont know why but I got a feeling in my gut its gonna hit 300 quid come 1st week of Jan.

Hope am wrong !

Core i7 is lovely but just not possible for most due to DDR3/mobo prices, So AMD can be back very easy just hope the performance is comparable....it doesnt have too do much to compete in games frankly the phenom 1 was close too core2 in games, in apps no doubt the core i7 will pull way ahead but then I dont get any thrills running unrar benchmarks ;)

A Few Quotes

you remeber the guy i mentioned in a previous post who is over at xxxx.com?

he is coming at me and stating that it will be just undr £200 inc Vat @15%

that will get my money if it hits on time, although he also mentioned that he isnt holding out hope of seeing them this side of Xmas, but hey whats new?

Yes!

Phenom II 940 and 920 both available for pre-order at my place!

Costs are 226 and 266 Euro, a lot less than I would have expected And of course, ordering it right now

Aussies ruin Christmas

An Australian e-tailer is probably enjoying AMD's wrath after listing two Phenom II CPUs on its site yesterday. The site was taken down after AMD released its hounds, but it was too late, and you can still find it here. Luckily for us, now we have a bit more info on the pricing of AMD's upcoming 45nm CPUs.

First in line is the AMD Phenom II X4 920, yes, 920, like Intel's i7. It's clocked at 2.8GHz, multiplier locked, it has 2MB L2 + 6MB L3 Cache and a TDP of 125W. The price stands at 471 AUD, which translates to 300USD or €200, depending on how much ground the euro loses against the dollar today. Note that prices in Australia are usually a tad higher than in the States and the cheapest Core i7 920 costs about the same on newegg.

The Phenom II X4 940 with an unlocked multiplier and a 3GHz clock is priced at 532 AUD (in real money that's 350 USD or 230 euro).

Take these numbers with a grain of salt. It's still a bit too early in the game to know the exact price, it's still subject to change. It seems a bit too closely priced to Core i7, which can only mean two things: either it's on par with Intel in terms of performance, or someone just crunched the numbers wrong.

Update:

After posting the story, we came across some additional information from several sources. It seems the site has jacked up the prices by about 10 percent over the MSRP. Coupled with traditionally high prices in Australia, it is likely the retail price in the US will end up about 25 percent lower than the $350/300 list price we reported. We don't have any exact numbers, and as we already said, it's a bit too early to have any at the moment. However, if the new Phenoms really do end up priced at $265 for the 940 model and $225 for the 920, they could become a tempting alternative to Intel's quad-core offer.

Some good info there hopefully is under £250 at launch, will make a lovely upgrade for anyone with an AM2 board :)

But I still got a feeling it wont match core i7 in software performance, 3d games I think it will be similar to Core 2 duo which should mean hopefully similar to Core i7 also :)

Based on markup and GBP-USD doing badly (1.48 per pound as I am typing this!) don't excpect miracles. Let's just hope they can compete with intel and force retailers with massive stocks (of intel) go on credit crunch x-mas sale frenzy.

It looks like early pricing suggests £190 and £231 for the top two models. Which isn't half bad, 3Ghz, possibly looking at a very decent high performance 4ghz on air, with £40 4Gb mem and £120 buys you the dfi board. We're getting screwed in the Uk on the foxconn board which is very highly rated, its circa £200 in the uk while the places that sell it in the US have been doing it for $100 lately, which is what £70-75 for a top class top end board that overclocks great. lol, 175% price bump for the board in the uk, insane frankly. THe dfi is cheaper over there aswell, if the foxconn was competitively priced the dfi might be cheaper here. When more people are buying phenom more people will get their SB750 boards out and competition will increase, prices will drop further.

Not a bad price at all for a quad core incredibly fast computer. At the very least it should cause some big drops in the C2Q range. If its pretty competitive to the i7 it might cause their prices to drop also.

If it's anywhere near £200 it'll be a winner, AnandTech in their blog show very respectable figures against the i7, it's slower but not by much and that was on a Intel optimised LINPACK and i7 running DDR3.

AMD prices are always high in the UK, be it motherboards or chips.

yes and no, Foxconn boards are ridiculous, £205 for a board you can get for $100 in the states(albeit on offer, but still only $140 normally) is a joke. AMD prices are pretty decent though on chips. The 9950be can be had for £130 at the moment which isn't half bad at all.

I also hadn't really noticed but the early sightings at £230, also list the 15th of December, which sounds too early but then again, the longer AMD have stuff out before INtel's midrange comes out the better. AMD also did a 2nd price cut the other day, which was very soon after their last price cut and could be a sign of a couple weeks cheaper prices to clear out existing stock before new chips come out. The aussie site that first listed them also had 16th december as the expected date. So we might see them in a couple weeks giving you a overclockable, fast system thats relatively cheap , significantly cheaper as a cpu/mobo/mem combo than I7.

its also supposed to be great for power usage, partially the drop to 45nm and partially the fact that AMD chipsets are crapping all over intel parts for power usage. Its numbers are very good, the only few places its not great in should theoretically be much closer when you take tripple channel mem out the equation when it comes to the midrange i7 stuff.

buy some AMD shares anyhow, the next 6 months should see their market share in desktop come back up, and server side they've got a significant lead in time before i7 based server stuff is available in the 4/8 way markets.

Phenom II available ‘fore Yule

By Paul Taylor: Friday, 05 December 2008, 6:12 PM

DISTRIBUTORS IN EUROPE and North America will begin shipping both OEM and retail boxes of the Phenom II 920 and Phenom II 940 starting December 18th (Europe), according to one distributor, and December 20th (North America).

The Phenom II X4 920 SKU will sell at about $235 to retailers, while the overclocking whiz-kid, the Phenom II X4 940 will ship at $275. At least one distributor says December 20th is the ETA for the shipment.

As far as we can tell, pricing in Europe will be around €220 for the 920 but will become available from the 18th. We couldn’t get a pricing on the 940, though, but we’d expect it to be in the €250-265 range. Add tax to these numbers, if you will.

This puts the Phenom II X4 940 just under the Core 2 Quad 9550, while the Phenom II X4 920 will undercut the Q9400. Expect Intel to slash prices just before Christmas.

So those of you who wrote letters to Saint Nick asking for Phenom II, might get your wishes after all.

We couldn’t get hold of AMD for a comment, but there isn’t much to comment, is there? Wonder how that January 8 NDA will hold up when these things reach the market? µ
