Hey guys looking to upgrade my CPU from my 6000+ x2. Im currently using an ASUS M3A78 pro AM2+ which from research doesn't overclock very well so a BE CPU is the way to go. I was gearing up waiting for the 955 to drop as close to £100 as possible before buying buy I recently noticed some places still have the 940 for £20 cheaper. It then got me wondering since I won't be upgrading my Motherboard until I do a total rebuild would it be worth getting the AM2+ 940 over the AM3 955?My other option is to hold on longer and pick up a new motherboard with dual 16XPCI slots but in that event I would rather grab an intel. So what do you think? should I:

a)Pull the trigger now and get the phenom II 940
b)wait abit longer and get the phenom II 955
c) Hold out another year or so and go for a rebuild

My current build is
Athlon 6000+ X2
Asus M3A78 Pro
8gb ram
HD4870 512mb

Edit: My main uses are gaming, some 3D modeling and photo editing.

I'd go for the Phenom 940 tbh, I went for the 955 initially but tbh, it seems the 940 will pretty much always go to 955 speeds and beyond.
Happy with the 955 though, rest of system is pretty similar, M3A38/8gig/4870 1gb.

If it's working out a decent enough amount cheaper for the 940 get it, if not, go 955. :)
It'd be a decent upgrade from the 6000+.

Yea, 6000+ is at the end of its life. I keep thinking a nice rebuild s I can get SLI/Crossfire would be nice but I really don't want to spend that sort of cash yet, nor do I really need to in all honesty. By simply upgrading the the processor I should get a couple or more years ot of it I hope.

Hey feeddagoat. I don't agree that a Black Edition is the way to go! :p

Have you looked at the Athlon II chips? they all seem to overclock to 3.5GHz with little effort, you could pick up a 45nm Tri-Core for approx £55 which is a reasonable sum to pay and will be an improvement over your older 90nm chip (which you can sell afterwards to offset the cost of the newer chip!). . .

I was looking at the athon II 620. seems to really miss that l3 cache but the 425 i think it was matched the phenom II 720 even when both where overclocked to max. Any review ive seen of my board tho has said its a horrible overclocker.

If I got some confidence my board would overclock I would got for an AthlonII. I'm also using very slow ram. Would it also affect my overclock on this board badly?
