Was looking at few reviews of this chip.. Nice as it is isnt it very over priced?

For £120.00 you can get a 720Be easy enough to overclock to 3.6ghz possibly even 3.8ghz depending on chip etc.

Now most reviews I have seen for the 955be show over clocks of 3.8ghz and 4ghz as really a maximum.. so really you are getting extra 200mhz depending on chips...

Is this really worth the £100.00? i know there is extra core but nothing really uses this, isnt this price reange for i7? which is by many counts a better chip at moment?

What do you guys think? should this chip be so much or should it be a budget chip like other amd?

I reckon it will drop rather sharply in price in a few months, much like the 940 did. At the moment it is just filling a price segment in their line up.

CPU wise it may sit in the same price bracket as the i7 920, the cost of motherboards for the Phenom is nice and low, making it cheaper as a platform. Overall as a system in terms of cost it's like buying a Q9550/P45 machine, which it holds up well against.

Frankly I don't think it's worth the extra cash but that's because the Phenom II X4 940 is priced at £165. Another £60 for a 200MHz frequency increase and DDR3 support isn't worth it in my opinion.

One problem with your point is that the 720 is not a quad so its apples to oranges which introduces many other points than the one your trying to make.

The 955 is the flagship which is common for flagships to have a premium higher than their true worth.

Most apps don't make use of 3 cores either but programs that do use more than 2cores will make use of 4.

Thats like buying the i7 965 @ £800 when you can get a i7 920 @£250
Both these cpus clock easily to 4Ghz so in the same piont is it worth the extra £550 to get the i7 965

its an unlocked multi chip for less than £500

its the best phenom2 - period

you dont see intel extremes for less than 500 boys

plus it clocks to 4ghz on air easy peasy and 5ghz on a half decent water kit if you have skills

That new AMD chip cant even best an Core i7-920 it needs too be £160-170 imo :)

Imagine that bargain

No it cant best it.
But its close enough to warrant a close enough price & we're not talking about OEM versions & you got to take into account the unlocked multi.
A bargain is something you believe to be worth more than the asking price so you cant say it needs to be £160-170 & then say its a bargain.

And cheaper motherboards...

For the average joe that doesn't know anything about computers, the Phenom 2 955 is a nice chip. If they don't know anything about computers, getting a top of the line chip for £220-odd sounds better than getting a bottom of the range chip for the same money (i.e. i7).

As said already, the i7 costs include expensive motherboards plus a lot of people will already have compatible AMD boards.

So faced with a choice of £200 for a comparable i7 performing AMD chip or £400+ to swap platforms to get the same performance I know which I would go for.

Even buying new you can now put together a similar performing amd rig for less than an i7 rig. Of course if buying new then the i7 rig has other advantages like being able to choose between using xfire and SLI.

True its a Retail & unlocked chip its still priced nicely against the Core i7-920 oem, my eyes must be decieving me I belived the Core i7-920 retail was about £230 a while back!

AMD Will always delivery an overall better price/performance soloution over Intel, lucky for us.

Well, the drop below £200 did it for me and I had to order.
I expect they'll go down another £20-£30 in the next few months but it's not too big a deal...
I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of speed increases there'll be, I've been more than happy with the old 9600 @ 2.5 for the last few months but figure it's time for a boost.
