Hey all, I have an AM3 board so i'm going to be putting a Phenom II x4 into it to last until Ivybridge/near when Ivybridge is launching, but I just wondered if it would be worth going for the 980 as it appears to have a bit more overclocking headroom from the benchmarks/comments i've seen? or is it worth going with a 955 and just overclocking that? thank you for your time :)

Just a shame they're so bloomin' expensive. £85 for a 955 is about £20 more than I'd be happy to pay for one, given how old they are now, and how much better even an i3 is for gaming.

Well, according to this anyhow...

I have a Core i3 2100 myself and I don't think the Phenom II X4 955BE is expensive at £80 to £85,especially after seeing how far the newer ones overclock too.

I got a 955 to tide me over till BD(ha!) but I got it overclocked past the 980 without it breaking a sweat. I'll be hanging on to it for a while. It's a great little chip.

I'd say go the 955 also, it'll clock well and save you some cash for other parts/future upgrade.
Don't know how long I've had mine for now, a couple of years or more, it has almost been as good value as my old xp2500. :)
