Setting up a PC as a gift for my nephew, and was just wondering if this seems ok?

I haven't used an AMD chip in ages! The RAM that I ordered was 4GB (2x2) OCZ Gold 1333 but CPUz seemed to think it was 1600MHz, so I bumped it up in BIOS and all seems well stability wise. Haven't looked at the labels on the sticks tbh!

BTW the CPU is on stock cooling for now in a Gigabyte 880GM-D2H board, 700w OCZ 700w ModXstreme Pro and a GTX480 all wrapped in a Coolermaster Storm Scout

if it's just for gaming then that looks good. Might see if you could squeeze a few more GHz from teh CPU though ....3.8 maybe?

Everything looks good there
As subbytna has said the cpu has some overclocking head room being a C3 variant it should do 4Ghz+.
However to relize this you would need to upgrade the cooling from stock as clocking it will push up the temps and the stock cooler may start to struggle keeping it under 70c

So you ordered 1333mhz RAM but got 1600mhz instead? ;)

Looks good if it's just for gaming. What resolution will he be playing on?

The RAM is definitely 1600, says so on the label! Packagings says 1333 :) He has two screens, a 22" 1680x1050 monitor and a 32" 1080 tv. Just did some Crysis benchmarks and the 480 is quite a card. It hits 75c though, even though its quite cool in here. The CPU tops out at 55c.

I'm trying to get him into PC gaming/hardware so well be doing some overclocking of the chip after Christmas. So all the other frequencies are ok? like the bus speed and HT link?

Yup, everything looks fine.
The 480 is a hot card anyway so 75c is normal.

Any chance of finding out the RAM model number? Should be on the label or under the SPD tab in CPU-Z.

Wouldn't overclocking it run the risk of having crashes after you find what you think is a stable clock but actually isn't in some apps?
If I had a system as beefy as that, I'd let him use it at stock for a while, and then ask him if he want to clock it once he finds he likes PC gaming.

Mine runs fine at 3.7Ghz no harm in trying and making sure its stable.

Hi d_brennen,

can you download and run HWMonitor and use that instead of CoreTemp . . . run Prime95 for 15 mins and post up another screenie please! :)

If you can also squeeze in a CPU-z [SPD] tab so we can see what the stock timings are? . . . 11-11-11-24 seems mega slack?

What cooler are you using on that chip? . . . I think your processor is OverVolting a bit as there is no way a C3 X4 needs 1.392-1.400vCore to run at stock . . . . I think if you manually set 1.300-1.400vCore in the BIOS that would be enough to pump that chip right up to 3800MHz . . .

I'd also recommend raising the CPU-NB frequency from 2000MHz up to 2600MHz which it may well do on stock CPU-NB volts . . . this helps speed up the memory transfers and reduce system latency . . . .

adjust your ram manually, msybe run your ram at 1333 and timings down to 8,(11 seams slack), also NB O/C to x11(2200)will improve things abit more

Hi Big.Wayne, will do some more tomorrow. The RAM timings and CPU volts are all at auto, the cooler is the piddly little one you get with the chip! Will get HWmonitor on the go in the morning. BTW when there is no load the voltage shows as 1.000v.

Just want to give the lad the PC fully working, so he can game etc with no worries about stability, if he gets interested then we'll look into overclocking it. TBH AMD overclocking is a bit alien to me, have been an Intel user since my mighty Athlon XP 3200+ couldn't keep up lol

It couldn't be any more easier mate! :D

Heres the chip you have

AMD® Phenom™ II X4 965BE
  • CPU Multi = 17
  • HT ref.Clock = 200
  • Processor Speed = 3400
CPU Multi x HT ref.Clock = Processor Speed

17 x 200 = 3400

The CPU Multi is *unlocked* on the Black Edition chips . . . this is a premium feature that Intel® will be charging users for with their next gen chips but you got it for free! ;)

So if you want to do a cheeky little overclock all you gotta do is go into the BIOS and change the CPU Multi from x17 to x18 and your done!

18 x 200 = 3600

And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to get to 3800MHz

19 x 200 = 3800

The CPU-NB is the on-chip memory controller . . . used to be called the Northbridge and was a separate chip on the motherboard . . . this as standard runs at 2.0GHz which is worked out like so

CPU-NB Multi x HT ref.Clock = CPU-NB Speed

10 x 200 = 2000

Again as its a premium Black-Edition chip this CPU-NB multiplier is *unlocked* so you can increase its frequency just by upping the multi in BIOS . . .

11 x 200 = 2200
12 x 200 = 2400
13 x 200 = 2600

Is that easy or what? . . . . pretty sure the chip can do 3.8GHz with maybe vCore on [Auto] and the CPU-NB should be fine for 2.4GHz on [Auto] . . . maybe will need a boost @ 2.6GHz

Nice and easy!

He didn't get it for free... he got the black edition and paid for it! :p

*PS. Please don't take this comment seriously, and then spend 50 minutes hunting around for a billion graphs and painstakingly post lay them out to try and demonstrate a point.

Big.Wayne, if it's really that easy, and if I successfully OC my 965 (when I install, on Christmas) just by raising mult. and auto voltage, I will kiss you. I haven't OC'd a CPU before, but I was planning on rasing mult. .5 at a time, and when unstable increase the volts. I guess it doesn't need to be that hard? (That's what she...)

something is slightly amiss with my 965, my board is defaulting to 1.296v load / 0.960v idle. i dont know if phenom 2 voltages are set per-chip or not though, could just be my board reading wrong maybe. either way it works fine :p

It's really not that hard . . . fair play if you never overclocked before . . . all the nerves from horror stories and web rumours etc etc . . .

Have a snoop through this thread when you got the Mince Pie sweat . . . start at post #1 and keep going until your eyeballs get a bit dry . . . :p

Don't be a tit all your life Dark_Angel! . . . there was no additional premium paid for the unlocked multi . . . it's value added . . . deal with it! :p

TBH, I think in some ways (thread hijack) Intel kind of stole the idea for the K series from the BE's... but obviously also locked the FSB too.

Though I'm opting for a Sandy personally, I do kind of hope their business model as offering the K as an 'optional extra' and locking FSB fails.

just to add to the unlocked multiplier thing - the majority of modern motherboards support increments of 0.5 on the cpu multi ie:
17 x 200 = 3400
17.5 x 200 = 3500

and so on
