Hello,

I have a deal through a friend working for o2 where i can get 30% off a monthly tariff. I would like to get a new smart phone and have a budget of approx £250 + £25-30 a month (before discount).

Ideally id like to buy a nexus 7 tablet or similar with most of the £250 and then whatever is left on a phone but was wondering what you thought the best option would be.

1. Buy an iphone 5 16gb - £250 upfront then £26 a month on the 'on and on' tariff. no nexus 7.
2. Buy an Samsung note 2 £299 (so slightly over budget but more of a tablet) and then £26 a month on the 'on and on' tariff. no nexus 7.
3. Sony xperia T or HTC one X - £79 and then £27 a month. and buy the nexus 7.

Any thoughts?

The note II is the best of both really.

But if you badly want a phone and tablet then get something like the HTC one X+ or XL instead (better than the X, although they will be more expensive,) or you could get a one S (make sure it is the S4 chipset version), personally I would much rather get the one S over the X and xperia T. Should also work out cheaper than both of them, but it is better in more areas, for some people the main downside is storage.

EDIT:

Oh wait, you wouldn't be able to get the XL on o2.......

And the X+ isn't available

:o

EDIT:

Yeah, if you want the tablet, the one X, one S and SE Xperia T are your only options.

If I where in your shoes and didn't mind the size of the note II for everyday use as a phone then that would be my choice.

I will find out how much the One S is. It will be interesting to see what the update to the Nexus line up is on Monday.

Also make sure you find out what chipset version they are supplying, currently 2 versions:

S4 chipset, has a clock speed of 1.5GHz
S3 chipset, has a clock speed of 1.7GHz

You want the S4 version, far better. Main differences is performance and power efficiency.

Regarding the announcement about devices, software on the 29th by Google:

Buy online and use quidco for £50 cashback. I assume your friend can still offer you the 30% discount on your monthly line rental?

I have a Note II, it is brilliant. If you don't mind the size of it, you won't really find anything better then it.

I know a few people who have 30% discount on o2, correct me if I'm wrong but can't you buy the handset from anywhere as long as it's on o2? And once you have your o2 number, your friend can then apply the 30% discount? If he can do this, then you can get a far better deal then the ones on the o2 site.
