Phone leaking

Every phone seems to get leaked nowadays.

Is this because the leakers have got so good that the companies don't care anymore, or is it a way of driving up hype? For example, HTC attempted to hide the M9 by using decoy phones but the real thing (supposedly) has been leaked anyway.

I have to say I miss the surprise. Do you remember when the next iPhone was a complete surprise? The rumours were the interesting and fun part; nowadays it's not rumours, rather early confirmation.

I think it's more they're so mass produced its hard to keep a lid on something during prototype manufacture etc. but I doubt the manufactures care as it's a way of hyping up a product.

This, and the tech savvy know within reason what the hardware could/should be, so that narrows the field of speculation somewhat.

I don't know why we have so much secrecy and awe upon revelation, people want smartphones there's no reason for apple style hype becoming the industry standard.

Yer just release the damn specs. Nothing worse than something being OVER hyped and then a massive let down.

I can understand the way it looks, I'm fine with that. At the end of the day they're all rectangles, for me I care about features and specs more than how pretty it is.

Spec rumours about phones can also in some ways hurt the phone, seems they get like a game of Chinese whispers. It starts as a rumour then some site makes it out to be fact, then next thing is the official specs get released and the moaning commences if its not quite as OTT as the rumour.

Same with a lot of tech things, most notably video cards.

I tend to be less interested in the appearance rumours, they seem idealistic and far fetched at best sometimes.

More interested in the specifications, but even at that I get put off by silly claims, battery life, etc!

I miss the surprise aspect of a particular new phone.

Unfortunately with social media and dedicated leaksters like @upleaks and @evleaks getting the jump on things it takes the sheen off the whole process.

I just skim any leaks. If the phone looks funky from the corner of my eye I might pay some more attention but otherwise it's "meh" after "meh" on all these leaks.
