Ok well i've still got my 5 year old samsung something so I think i'm due an upgrade. I'm looking to go contract this time as i'm using my phone a lot more now that i'm 17.

I'd ideally like to get some sort of cashback deal like shown on mobiles.co.uk and i'd prefer clearance to get a better deal. I've got a budget of £15 per month and I only really need about 50-100 mins and internet is preferable.

My only requirements for the phone is that it has an onscreen qwerty keyboard.

Any suggestions guys? I've been looking at the LG optimus. I that a good phone?

Thought about buying an Orange San Francisco and then just getting a GiffGaff payg sim?

£10 for 250minutes and unlimited texts/web.

The San Fran is a great phone, love mine, and can be rooted and put Android 2.2 on with ease.
Can be had for £79 if you have or know someone who has an Orange payg sim, or £99 with student discount otherwise.

Free to unlock as well (check the big thread).

@thepeganator

I just ordered a giffgaff sim, if I were to buy the San Francisco I presume it comes with an Orange sim that you must top up 10 quid right? Just the one top-up and that's it?

Cheers

Don't think you even need to top it up unless you want to use/keep the SIM. I think the £99 includes the first top up, but I'm sure someone with one can confirm.

You have to buy a £10 top up, the phone is £99 so £109 with the top up.

You get 10% off as a student though (being 17 I assume you are).

You never need to use it though, I only started using it in the last week due to problems with my contract :).

I'm not the original poster. Thanks for the help though, I really appreciate it.

@thepeganator - One more question if you wouldn't mind.

With the giffgaff bundles, do they run out each month, or does the package keep going until empty? At what point would it be empty, when both texts and minutes finish or either?

I'm a light call/text user so even the 10 quid bundle is more than enough for me.

The Giffgaff Goodybags lasts for a month, then you have to buy another one. You can queue a second Goodybag which will be applied as soon as the first expires.

Seeing as it's unlimited texts and internet, it's a month :D

Tenner a month is nothing though, I'm stuck on a £30 contract, which was £35!

Sorry! Didn't read who posted :P

If you want to be really mercenary, Dialaphone can do you a free HTC Desire HD with 300mins, unlimited texts and 500mb internet for £22.92 a month for a 24 month contract. With £50 cashback from Quidco, you're looking at £20.84 per month. Flog the Desire HD on ebay for £375 and pay £109 for an Orange San Francisco, leading to costs of £9.75 per month. Or keep the Desire HD and pay six quid over your £15 budget for a phone that'll still be just about running the latest stuff smoothly in 24 months.

No doubt my cunning plan is full of holes and someone will be along shortly to point them out :)
