Phone slowing down

I have a HTC M9, which after a factory reset runs like an absolute dream.

however within the space of 2 weeks it starts to slow down.
Specifically the 2 apps that lag the most are facebook and mail.

Mail will just completely freeze the phone up whilst it is updating (getting new mails from the server), I do have 5 email accounts setup but that shouldn't really make a difference should it ?

apps that I have/use regularly are nothing out of the ordinary, I can list if it matters.

The mail app is driving me nuts.
I have tried clearing the app cache and also the phone cache but it doesn't make any difference.

I don't know the answer, except to suggest that there are a multitude of different email apps for Android, so maybe try another ? Or does an email account get picked up by all installed email accounts, I don't know.

Have you tried resetting and not setting up your 5 mail accounts to try and rule that out?

Or maybe just force stopping + disabling syncs to see if its that working in the background causing issues perhaps.

once I tap on the mail app, it automatically starts syncing and the phone freezes until it has finished.

I am willing to try an alternate mail app for sure.
Any recommendations ?

Gmail is also preinstalled and should work fine.

Swipe or Metal are good Facebook alternatives.

I set the mail app to only sync one week, that seems to calm it down.

And I uninstalled Facebook because the app is so awful (kills the battery and keeps switching notifications back on - i suspect every time it updates). I don't use FB much, so just go through browser on the rare occasions.

I was in the process of trying this and one mail account crashed the app when I tried to go in to the sync settings.
then it got to the point that it crashed instantly as soon as I clicked on the app (tried clearing phone and app cache to no avail)

I ended up wiping the data from the app, and have re-added all of the accounts, so far it is behaving much better, although I don't know the password for the offending mail account so i'll have to wait until I get home to re-add that one.
