Phone tracking question

Just a few quick questions.

I know you can track the location of a mobile phone via some companys, and as far as i am aware you need to have the phone you wish to track with you when you first sign up, as the phone will get a confirmation text to accept the service or decline.

Now, is it possible to track a mobile phone not in your possession, but you know the number, and also is it possible to read texts on one phone from a different phone without the original owner knowing?

Before anyone asks i do not want to do this myself, only asking as a friend belives that someone is some how getting into there texts and tracking there phone.

only way i can think of getting texts is if they signed them up to o2 bluebook, where you can see all of the texts your phone has received for the last month

The websites that send the confirmation text also send a text before every request asking is it ok if we tell X where you are.
Its mainly for parents to keep tabs on their kids

Didn't know that you get a confirmation text with each request, reassuring to know that, will pass the info on.
Not sure if there symbian/windows, but the phones are a N95 and a Nokia 1200.

Only asking if possible, i don't realy want to know the hows

The n95 is symbian so that may be the weak point.
There are programs that you can secretly instal without knowledge that will send duplicate messages to another number and some that i could(not that i would though) install that if i phoned you from my special number your N95 would answer automaticaly without lighting up Etc so I could listen in on whatever was happening in the background.

Your friend needs to check his credit on his phone send 1 text and check his balance if it goes down by 2 message cost then he has been hijacked.

Get him to check and pop back

Your friend needs to format his memory card and possibly his phone memory
As for the Nokia 1200 Its a cheap phone and i could have been hardware hacked from new (was it bought for himor has someone swapped it without his knowledge) so tell him to scrap it.

I think the N95 is where his problem really is.

This kind of software can be installed via text or manually and hides itself so a format is probably the only answer.
