Hi , just wondering if anyone knows the names of any software that can unlock mobile phones to work on any network ?

I bought a Motorola Razr v3 off my mate as a back-up/work phone but it will only let me use a virgin sim card in it.

Id like to unlock it myself so it works on orange.

Any ideas?

I think the only strictly legal solution is to ring Virgin and ask for the code to unlock it.

I dont think it is illegal to unlock a phone otherwise there'd be a ton of websites out of business with fines and criminal records.
(Just my opinion, I'n no lawyer.)

In answer to the ops question just google. Not sure if there is a free way but its quite easily done for £10-£15 if not a lot cheaper.

I unlocked my Virgin phone a few years back; they did it for free because I'd been a customer long enough. Your mate might be able to help you out with that.

Well I managed to do it myself for free. Had to downgrade the firmware , flash it with the recommended firmware for unlocking , then unlock it using moto-unlocker 2005.

Im chuffed :D never done anything like that before and it works perfectly , at least with 02 and orange sims (the only ones ive tried so far.

Yep, while it is perfectly legal to unlock phones, the software to do it is not freely available and all the stuff you can download is warez.

Unless you are still under contract and desperately need to unlock your phone then never pay these company's who say they can unlock your phone for you.
All of the networks have a policy on unlocking phones that are no longer under a contract.
They all charge a nominal fee to do it - £10-£20, but it's no more than these other sites charge and it gets done by the network.

Take it to a market, there's always someone who will do it for a tenner.

And there's definately nothing illegal about it - once you've bought it, you can do what you want with it.

Interestingly whilst they may have a policy of doing that, it's not actually a legal requirement IIRC. Hence why O2 have always refused to unlock iPhones.

No the iPhone was different.
O2 held an "exclusive" on the device.
As far as Apple & O2 were concerned you "couldn't" unlock the iPhone.

The only exception to the rule on having to unlock is if the phone is a total exclusvie to the network - in which case it is the network's choice.

The idea is all down to competition laws.
I can get for example the Nokia 8500 on any network - so it should only be locked to a particular network until my contract runs out.
As the iPhone (at the time) was only available on O2 there is no competition laws to worry about and O2 can refuse to unlock.

O2 will unlock iPhones now, providing they're either pay-monthly, or pay-and go and have been on O2 for at least a year :)
