Photo import and management, what do you use?

I don't like using software to import...don't know why really, I just prefer doing it that way.

I do that too, but Lightroom as a library is great. It make use of the Metedata like you wouldn't believe.

that's my current method..

Use Aperture.

Although it's beginning to annoy me as I now have 1000+ images in it and it's becoming sluggish.

My too. I prefer to do it myself than use a wizard.

i tried using lightroom on my PC and also tried using aperture on my macbook.. i then went back to my computer > memory card > cut & paste...

i didnt like aperture, half of the options were always greyed out for some reason (maybe its because i'm shooting in jpg at the moment) and i didnt really like the control system.

lightroom was amazing, but i didnt like how my hard drive suddenly seemed to lose a few gb from not as many photos. it chews through space like nothing with the amount of backups it seemed to be making.

if i had an external HDD i'd go back to using Lightroom.

It does end up taking a fair bit of space with previews and catalogue backups. You can tweak the settings to reduce this but it's a bit of a hunt to find them all.

File...New Catalog

Lightroom should then use that catalogue the next time it starts although you can set it to ask you which catalogue to use - I have one per year as I find it runs quicker with a smaller catalogue.

I have been reading with interest all this praise for LR (I too have been using it but only up until 1.0 - much difference(s) with 1.1?) - I did find it however a bit clunky in terms importing and organising files, maybe I need to master the metadata aspect a bit more effectively...

Not so with Picasa, which although free is far from lightweight, and seems for my money much more intuitive and indeed faster to manage large collections. It certainly lacks a little in depth & power but in relative terms it holds out pretty well employing entirely reversible alterations (preserving like Lightroom the original file) and simple effective file management - easy exports, tagging etc.

has anyone compared the two (in terms of workflow)?

Tried lightroom but cant get on with it.

Used to use PictureProject to transfer and view pics quickly, but now use Nikon Transfer and ViewNX for quick viewing. Majority of processing is done in CaptureNX with odd bits being done in CS2

Just prefer how quickly i can get results in NX and the fact its the best at reading the in camera settings. Very little you cant tweak in NX.
