Hello fellow togs.

This thread has been suggested by another tog and thought it might be a good idea to keep all general discussion of photography in here, anything specific then we have thread for such things.

This will be a trial for now and I will look after this thread.

Please give you're thoughts if you want it to stay or not and let's see what happens.

Let's try to keep this agreat thread with no bickering ect

I will keep this as a sticky.

Enjoy :)

Would anyone please have any recommendations for sites or YouTube channels that specialise in gear reviews, especially lens reviews? There are lots out there - I just want to know who is worth listening to!

I'll start it off, has anyone used Affinity photo instead of Lightroom?

I have trialled AP buts its not a direct LR replacement, its more of a bridge between Photoshop and LR so Ive replaced LR with Capture One Pro. I also bought Cyberlink Photo Director Ultra which is direct LR replacement but I'm still not sure on it.

I'm also still fully not switched over though and still converting my unsupported RAWs to .DNG so they can be edited in LR6.

Cheers :) some of the gestures for Mac seem more fluid than LR and from a quick look on YouTube, it seems it's also easier to use that PS too.

Will give the trial ago, can you remember what's not available through the trial?

Can someone kindly recommend a (preferably free) online platform for starting a portfolio. Didn't Flickr recently get taken over and have capped their limit?

My nephew wants to get into photography, what's a good starting kit? Ideally camera + lens, will be taking pictures of wildlife, landscape and day trips out with the family.

£500 or less. No brand preference but does want interchangeable lenses.

I am biased but you can't go wrong with some of the entry level Nikons like the D3XXX range of D5XXX range. I have the D5200 which is an excellent entry level DLSR, the latest iteration is the D5600 which can be had under £500 with a kit lens. The D5XXX range typically has more features than the D3XXX range such as WiFi, fully articulating screen, more focus points, higher resolution screen and NFC. If you get a Nikon, you will have a huge catalogue of lenses! To start off I recommend the Nikon 35mm f1.8 which can be had for ~£150 (very cheap for a lens) and produces great results especially for the price.

Another contender might be the EOS M50, which a friend recently got as his first camera and rates it highly.

Forgot to reply to this sorry, we did go for the Nikon D5600. :)

Bit of a recommendation, had some photos printed by digital lab for our hallway that I took on a sailing exped a couple of years ago.

After using PB to print them and recieving overexposed pixelated prints I used digital lab and they were of good quality, the printing resolution is high and calibration seems to have matched what I uploaded.

[Edit] the paper used is Fujicolour Crystal Archive DPII professional, so should last for a long while.
