Hi guys,

Is there an easy way to get in to photography? I know nothing about cameras or photography for that matter. What magazines are the best to get? In my mind I want to be able to capture landscapes (nice holiday shots) and shots through glass/ plastic and things that are quite far away (good zoom) I have a digital camera but tbh its pants as hell. Can anyone help 

Enroll in a local college. If thats not an option then I would suggest getting some books and a pro-sumer camera before investing ££££££££££'s in an SLR system.

Buy a £200 Canon camera. Get a book on the basics of photography or ask here. Buy Practical Photography each month for inspiration.

Yes mister salesman ;)

Before you buy, go to the shop and test them out. If you are likely to be shooting in low light then FujiFilm have the best ISO/Noise ratio. To be honest though, they are pretty similar, just different names.

That was me 4 years ago :)

Reputable websites are a great source for learning the technical information – shutter speeds, apertures, ISO, focal lengths etc etc… Internet forums also have loads of info to search through.

The other aspect to photography is the creative side.
Anyone can point a camera at a landscape and take a photo but what makes a good photographer special is their ability to produce images with impact. Creative composition is harder to learn as there is no right or wrong way, only through practice will you see what looks good.

my advice as a fellow noob is to just get out and practice! i have a cannon a530 point and shoot but it has full manual settings. ive just gone out and started snapping, messing with settings and see what happens.

it does help to know in theory what everything does, but its also usefull to just snap away and see what the results are like. you dont need ££££ either to get good results. better equipment helps, but having the best slr in the world wont help if you dont know how to compose a picture and get the best out of the subject.

finally have fun, try and find new and interesting things to photograph.

Thanks guys, ill have a think and see what camera to buy etc and read a few mags before i go out and venture into anything.

i'm taking a look at the Practical Photography website and looking at a pdf of what they offer in the magazine , have to say ill be buying that tomorrow in the shops :D
