Photography Topic thread...

I got to try out this camera/lens combo (Leica M9-P, not a regular M9 and 50/0.95):

Amazing combination, surprisingly easy to nail the focus at 0.95! Now I know how Clarkson felt after he drove the Veyron and had to hand it back. Time to find £12,898! I think I shall start by looking for change in the back of the sofa.

Should try working directly for the church, biggest 5 month headache ever =/

Some vicars are awesome though :)

Agreed, I've had a few which have been brilliant and very photographer friendly.

Some of them deliberately make a photographers life hell though! (scuse the pun)

13k....on one camera and lens...

I just could not justify that, no matter how many pennies I had in the bank :p

B-b-b-But it's a Leica, of course you could!

If i won the lottery that would be up there in my first purchases for real.

Interesting question...

If I haven't got one by then, 5D3 (as it'll be out by then) whatever L glass I want/need but haven't yet got with accompanying flash equipment then lots of plane tickets and go traveling for a long time.

Much much better way to spend 13k imo :)

I couldn't justify 13k on a Leica because they jus't dont look/feel like a 13k camera should imo. I haven't necessarily held one...but I imagine I'd get annoyed with it's size. The 5D fits my hand like a glove and thats one of the things I love about it, it's so damn comfy to use.

So many people go 'ZOMG LEICA!" but they really do not do anything for me. If I had 5 million quid in the bank I certainly wouldn't buy the most expensive for the sake of it, I would buy what I wanted which I have listed above, much better way to utilise the money :)

It's a Leica and so many people rave about them because they are the definitive Rangefinder camera. The lenses on them are amazing and the M9 is great as it's a digital full frame rangefinder. I'm not saying the M9 is perfect though. They feel amazing by the way. :p

A 5D and a Rangefinder are different breeds of cameras. The whole process of shooting on a Rangefinder is lovely. I'm currently using a Mamiya 7 for some projects and it's just such a nice way to shoot over using a DSLR. They definitely suit a more journalistic style of shooting over using a DSLR. If you are choosing the 5D for how nicely it fits in your hand then you should get a Nikon as they are far superior ergonomically! :D

It's the same with people who buy Rolleiflex cameras though. They are the quintessential TLR. You can buy an Ikoflex or Mamiya TLR but it still wouldn't be a Rolleiflex.

How do they feel amazing?

I can't see how something that is as small as a credit card will feel amazing? :p

Leicas aren't that small actually, they're smaller than DSLRs but they aren't massively smaller than 35mm SLRs like the OM and even the F3. They're just less conspicuous looking.

Now, on the M9 and Noctilux, I certainly couldn't justify buying one unless I was super rich or Leica decided to give me one. But after holding and using that lens (I'm still not too keen on the M9 for some reason), I can totally understand how one could pay 7k for it. It's incredibly well made and finished, and the performance itself is mindblowing, there's just something in the way it renders images. Now, I don't think it's worth 7k, my VC 50/1.5 felt faster and smoother to focus, but the lens itself has an aura that's similar to Canon's 85L - you know that there lenses that focus faster, are lighter and more practical, however they produce results that make you smile every time. There's something really addictive and intoxicating about lenses like that.

It's a nice camera but the end result from it is not better than a FF offering from Nikon or Canon in my opinion. Nobody could tell the end result is from a leica, hence it would be £10k purely for bragging rights.

The leica isn't all about picture quality though. I think you have missed the point of the camera entirely. If i wanted quality for around the same price i'd get a Pentax 645D or Blad.

Well, picture quality is top of the list for me. I am not paying £10k because it feels better in my hand. £10k feels better in my bank tbh.

Watch some of those videos above.

For your line of work i wouldn't think the Leica is suited to you at all. I'm not surprised you wouldn't like it if I'm honest and i did expect you to post saying something negative about it anyway. I was almost hopeful you did. :p

Besides, I'm not telling you to buy one so it's not about that. I'm just trying to explain the merits of it.

I never said anything negative about it, it is just not worth the money it goes for.

Going to have my photo of the Scottish Parliament printed in Building Magazine as photo of the week/fortnight. 2nd one in the magazine in 13 months. Very happy and makes all the time and effort spent on a hobby even more worthwhile.

Scottish Parliament by *SM*, on Flickr

Thanks! Nothing outstanding about it, but I suppose it captures the space and structure, which is what the readers will be most interested in. (And it's gonna make Gaffer that little more famous!)
