Yeah as above, you could connect any large monitor to it - I just chose the Apple display because it suited me/ I wanted it.

Unless you are going to be doing anything really graphics intensive, Id still just go with the 13" macbook and a monitor over the iMac, as you get the best of both worlds.

Technically it is more powerful so you could argue that in a few years you will feel a slightly less slow down than compared with the MacBook but how long are you going to keep it?

Surely in a few years you would be replacing either with the latest and greatest?

You seem quite hung up on performance so your not buying a machine now to last you 10 years are you, you buy and use it until it no longer feels fast and replace.
 
In a way your right. But my current iMac is 6 years old so I do t really replace when new ones Comes out. I replace when machine struggles. This wouldn't struggle if it wasn't for Lightroom.

Have you upgraded your iMac? perhaps some more ram or an SSD may tide you over a bit longer till you can make a decision.
