Wow, some of those are pretty incredible. I wonder why there is so much lightning at the crater top?

the lightning is caused by all those ash/dust particles rubbing together. its fairly common in volcanic ash clouds

Static electricity caused by the outpourings of ash and smoke.

Nice photos - Iceland is amazingly beautiful at pretty much any time... now it's just plain spectacular.

Seeing stuff like that makes me wonder how our ancestors 50k years ago felt when they saw one of those things pop up... :eek:

Yes, it is. I was there a few years ago for a weekend. Apart from the beautiful landscape the air was so clean and fresh.

awsome pics might look ok on my messly 1280x1024 screen!!

you know i heard to day the last time this volcano erruptd it lasted for 2 years from 1821 to 1823!!! i really do wonder if it will last this long again if it does the world has moved on a very very long way in 187 years, and 2 years of interupted flight might see the end to the jet age!
