Photoshop help - how to save images with transparent background?

This should be in the software section but I guess you guys are likely to be more knowledged in PS than anyone else. I'm getting annoyed with how to save an object with a blank backround. Put simply, I've created a North arrow in PS, I want to save that north arrow, preferably as a Jpeg or similar so that I can use it over the top of an image or a map in powerpoint. The problem I keep getting is the background saves in block white even though I keep setting it as transparent.

I'm sure it's a quik fix but noob here can't figure it out! :(
 
You cant have transparenct JPGs. Save it as a PNG or GIF depending on the quality you need and if you have shadows etc

Best thing, select "save for web & devices" then pick PNG or GIF on the right hand side :)
