Hi all

After getting back into the photography and actually making an effort with it I was looking at the price of photoshop cs6 is this the only version of PS? Cause to be honest I don't want to pay £667 for some software.

Is there a cheaper version or a basic version of PS?

Or is there an alternative software that people use?

gimp = free
there is student versions of ps

also i received email about monthly installments for it instead of big one time payment.

or try to get a older version off ebay .

Elements is photo editing software and to be honest it does everything I need it to do, it's a watered down version of ps. For home users and hobbyists elements is great. For the professionals then ps is still the best bet.

Lightroom. 99% of basic post work can be done with Lightroom and it does so fantastically well; photoshop is only really there for cleanups for prints and for detailed stylistic work rather than processing.

This, I really only use LR these days. Don't know if it is fen worth buying PS elements ontop of LR.

I have Photoshop CS5 and am just getting into light room. From what i can see, LR does all you need it to do for photographs, and yes £667 is a lot to pay unless you are a professional - or a teacher like me who gets it for £100 :), cant complain too much there :)

I've got elements 10 and lightroom 4. To be honest, if you're confident you wont need a lot of changes after taking the photo, lightroom is the way to go. As an absolute beginner (great, that's that song stuck in my head), elements suited me fine. Lightroom is ace as you stick your card in the reader, import all your photos and work on them all from there, uploading, sorting for filing, etc. Two different programs, but both serve a purpose.

Elements is so cheap though, the extra time spent processing, may help you better understand exposure, etc. You can always get lightroom later.

It's not like Elements.

It's got less editing features in it, but is better suited to batch processing multiple photos. It's got more organisational properties than elements. Elements is just a photo editing program.

For example, say you take 10 photos. You import them from the card and they'll all load in a time line at the bottom of the screen. You select one then develop. You can then make minor adjustments and apply to the photo, and upload them. You can use it to arrange where you save the photos too, and can upload to various online resources straight from the program too.

Right, been having a look again at LR - god I cant understand how to use it right, it takes me AGES to get photos up form where i have them stored, and then i get a little lost as to what i do next. Can anyone point in the right direction for a guide on how to use this damn thing, a decent beginners guide, not some on teh ones i have seen and tried to follow out there, as i get lost with them as well.
