Hey guys,

I have a flyer which looks very boring at the mo. It is simply a pure black background with white text over it. What I want to do is to make the black background look like it is a beaten and worn suface, maybe with scartches, tears, etc, in it. Can anyone give me some advice or point me to any decent tutorials to achieve this kind of weathered look on a black surface?

Personally I'd find an image of the kind of thing you're looking for and edit it to your liking. There are a number of filters that you can use within PS but it's often difficult for someone newish to it to get good results.

Find some images of fairly nondescript old posters on a similar thread to your flyer and try those in the back ground. Desaturate them a bit, maybe try some of the 'Artistic' Filters within PS and play with them a bit.

Something like these:

I just did a random google image search for "Old Posters" and then followed it through to a flickr member that seems to like taking random photos of walls :) boring for him, useful for you!
