php argh

I'm attempting to learn some php, but would like to work locally rather than directly onto a server. Using a win7 x64 laptop (windows home premium I think)

I've installed wamp which I thought incuded everything I needed to get started, but am not getting a test include file to work. I'm not even sure if everything is set up correctly or whether I have to be manually adding paths to my environment variables etc.

Are there any clear tutorials for total beginnners around? Or any easy ways to test if php is working or what its missing?

Edit: when mousing over the W icon on the taskbar, I get WAMP5 - 1 of 2 services running - server Offline. I can't seem to get it online, as wampmanager or wampserver won't load up.

To test PHP simply put the following into a .php file:

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

What code are you trying?

I've installed xampp and tested the above and its all running smoothly.

sounds like you sorted it now but thought i'd add that a recent update to xampp completely messed it up working on win7 x64. i did a fresh install of win7 2 months ago and installed latest xampp to find one problem after the other after the other after the other. they may have sorted it now

I use usbwebserver for local work.

Well, I haven't had any major hiccups so far - then again I'm not really testing it thoroughly right now, just using it to check my php pages. Once I start getting mysql involved it might be a different story!
