PHP based Online Shop - recommendations?

I've been asked by a friend if I could make her a small online shop.

I'm considering making the whole site form scratch, however I was wondering if there any pre built options out there that I could work from.

Also, as this is my first attempt at an ecomerce site, how do you manage the transactions. Would using paypal / world pay or something like that be a good idea?

Both have plugins for Paypal and Worldpay as far as I'm aware.

Not the most fantastic software in the world but the price is right ;). If it's a really serious full-time venture, it might be worth splashing the cash and having something bespoke developed. You'd be looking at £5,000+ for this.
 
OSCommerce is now fast becoming out dated and will give problems on a lot of hosts , due to things like longvars and register_globals both required to be 'On' (there are contributions but they can be annoying to have to fish out and install)

x-cart is also a goodun.
 
You can turn on register_globals via .htaccess...any host which won't let that be done isn't worth bothering with because although it's a Big Security Risk, it's also still used lots :(

X-cart is good too, and only $299. Smarty templates and a CSS module :)
