Phuket 2 Weeks

Slightly off topic, but what sort of budget are you looking at for two weeks, staying in a decent place, with excursions, flights and spending money?

Quite fancy a trip to Thailand but haven't ventured outside Europe in a long time!

To do it comfortably
Flights
£600pp
Hotel: Decent hotel £120 isn per night
Spending money £100 per day -
So around £4k for 2 weeks.

To do it on the cheap
Flights £500 if you shop around a lot
Hotel £15 per night
Spending money £30 per day
excursions are about £50 pp
So around £2k for 2 weeks.

We did island hopping a couple of year ago, we stayed in Bangkok, then Ko Mak, then Ko Chang then back to Bangkok for a night then home.

It was somewhere in between the 2 above but all the hotels were 4 star, we just made up the travel inbetween ourselves and booked flights separately.

Awesome trip, keen to go back, although I think it'll be Vietnam next :)

well.. I say next.. got to save a bit first!

Details please.
Send me some details of that please? Interested

Sure. I'm in Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, about 10-15 minutes drive outside the main city. I'm paying monthly to someone who has bought the room from the condo management, but paying daily here at reception is about £4 per night. The place is called Supanich Condo, approximately here: http://goo.gl/maps/hFifu

If you want to rent in Thailand, it's best to walk around to look at noticeboards and signs outside places, the stuff online seems to be more expensive, and the locals don't advertise on the internet very much. The further you go from the city, the cheaper it seems to get, I saw an advert for a 2 bedroom house on the outskirts for about £60 per month. Here's 2 websites I've found for houses and apartments in Chiang Mai though:

Apologies if this is too off-topic.

Thanks, guess I will need to get saving if I'm going to make it happen!

Have you already booked 2 weeks in that hotel?

For me that the worst thing you can do in thailand Phuket isn't one of the nicest parts anyway and being based in one place the whole time leaves you with expensive rushed day trips as your only option. Beaches in Thailand are all about island hopping and seeing different things allthough with two weeks I would have done a couple of nights in Bangkok, a few nights in Chiang Mai andthen finished with a week on the beach split bettween two islands or one island and Phuket.

Going back to Phuket in July with the misses, will be my fourth time in Thailand, second time staying in hotels rather than travelling on a shoestring budget. Phuket is great, just hop on a moped and you have plenty to explore.

Does it need to be that side of thailand?

I went here in Ko Mak for 3 nights http://www.islandaresorthotel.com/rates.php then here http://www.dewaresortkohchang.com/ on Ko Chang for 4 days with an elephant trek, to be honest on the other side of Ko Chang it was pretty touristy (ie loads of mopeds and dodgy looking white guys with thai "girls") and everything I've heard of Phuket and Phi Phi suggests they're much worse.

Both those places are proper luxury well under £100 a night.

The only pricey thing I did in Thailand was the few nights in Bangkok to start and end which I thought were worth it for time to get your head into where you were and then a relax before a 14hr flight. Even then it was under £100 a night for the sort of thing you'd be well over £400 a night for in London I'd guess.

That other side of Thailand is much less hippy backpacky.

I agree with this.

Phuket can be lovely but there is so much more to Thailand. 2 Nights in BKK, 4 nights in the north and a week in Phuket/island split between 2 hotels is how I would do it.

Cheers for your help. We are flying out on the 18th March to 4th April. We are going to book up all trips when we are out there. In terms of spending money we were looking at 1k + 400 for excurions between us. This is going to be a holiday of a lifetime for us.

Food is quite expensive in both the JW M and annantara next door. There is a small "turtle" supermarket next door which has a pub upstairs.

If its not too late to change I would split your stay between there and another part of the island. It will get boring up there for 2 weeks.

The wife could happyily spend 2 weeks by the pool and i'm other end of the scale. I think we are just going to do an excurision every 3 days or something. Not changining the holiday now. Whats the pub like for food?

Its ok, nothing amazing but ok. The Siam Deli in the JW was not bad for lunch and sandwiches.

You will get hounded by people to go on a vacation club sales presentation AKA time share, they will offer you lots of free incentives to go. You can actually get 3 or 4 nights in a 2 bed suite in the JW for around £100 (total not per night) if you agree to sit though a high pressure time share sales pitch.

Email this guy [email protected] and he can sort out the annatara for around £120 per night if you agree to go to the time share thing.

Dunno if it's of any interest but me and a mate went on a sea fishing trip from Phuket town, there was about another 8 people on the boat and we travelled to some island whilst catching some tuna on the way, once close to the island we stopped and the captain made some Thai fried rice with bits of the tuna in it, then there was some time to have a bit of a swim in the crystal clear water

We'll worth it if that's your thing
