Physical amount of RAM question?

If I were looking to increase my current RAM to 16Gb, would it perform better to have 4x4Gb or 2x8Gb?. I would assume the best option for the 2x8Gb for space in future to expand to 32Gb but was wondering whether more sticks of RAM would perform better?.

Current setup:

AMD FX4100 @ 3.6Ghz
GIGABYTE GA-880GM-USB3
4Gb RAM 2x2Gb @ 1333Mhz
OCZ Agility 3 60Gb
Pioneer Bluray Optical

Just did a little more research and found my motherboard only supports up to 16Gb. but in theory which option would perform better?

For a board that just supports dual channel it won't make any difference. On a quad channel board (socket 2011) 4 x 4GB would perform better.

2x8gb since you can also upgrade in future
