Hey, weve got to do a presentation for physics coursework and i was in search of some ideas, i dont want help with the actuall work as that would be cheating, what i want i a material and one of its uses, we will need to do a presentation or poster (most choose posters) on a material and what makes it suited to its use, previous examples we've been shown are silicon in microchips, PET in coke bottles, that kinda stuff. Im just at a loss as to which material i should do.......

Thanks!!

The snow in those minature snow globes. How do they stop the snow from melting?

CFRP is always a good one for secondary school, as you get to say "monocoque" and this usually sets most of the class giggling whilst you keep a straight face and winds up the teacher. :D

GLARE is another one that is interesting (GLAss-REinforced-fibre-metal-laminate) Its a composite that is starting to be used in the aviation industry as it has many benifits over aluminium alloys.
Video demonstration of the properties when suffereing attack by chicken cannon here (starts about 4:10 in) and is most of most of this clip too

ETFE and its use in the water-cube roof in beijing.

Steel and its uses in pretty much anything (bridges?)

Asbestos and its uses

ABS pressure rated piping and why it is approved for compressed air while PVC piping with similar pressure ratings is not.

It's due to the physical properties of each plastic and how they fail ^_^

Iron, Cobalt or Nickel in Hard Drive Read/Writes heads - with Silicon Carbide (or more generally ferromagnetism, Spin valves, TMR, GMR or MR heads) ;)

In fact anything to do with Iron with regard to magnetism.

Or Lead (as bullets and a million other uses) - because of it's price, density and abundance.
