Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows offhand what 2 disadvantages and advantages of resonance are? :D yes this is homework and yes im lazy. Google just gives me a load of science journals which dont make any sense to me. Been at it for a while and no luck.

I know it would make something oscilate violently but what are the advantages (and dis..) it being applied in life?

Fine.

Advantages:
* Musical instruments
* Fat women smashing wine glasses with sustained sounds (it's cool therefore it counts as an advantage :) )
* ... magnetic resonance imagery (eg. MRI scans at the hospital)

Disadvantages:
Destructive forces, for example:
* Bridges / other structures may collapse if the forcing term is in phase with the resonant frequency (like what happened to the millenium bridge with people walking across it)
* Excessive vibration in alsorts of powered vehicles (many rockets have been torn apart by rosonant vibration)
 
Washing machines could potentially break themselves if components have a resonant frequency close to that which the drum spins at
 
Believe me bridge resonance is a pain in the bum (my dissertation is on a footbridge) but if you want to find something interesting (probably not true) have a look for a guy called Tesler (check spelling :P) he was supposed to of made a device that resonated to destroy buildings :)
