Michio Kaku. Any of his books. Even his TV stuff is excellent although less serious.

Parallel universe is a good book to start with, plenty of string theory in it.

I also found why does e=mc2 by Brian Cox and others very good book, a bit simple in places, but I actually learnt quite a lot and they explain far more than I've heard/read in other places. Its one you have to stick with, even though the boring bits, but it is very useful.
 
It doesn't help when what concepts you thought everyone was behind, was actually last weeks theory, and now they have five more to choose from.

I'm pretty sure what I learnt about electrons is wrong these days.

Take it from a guy who does a PhD in Physics - most people don't really know what an electron is - me included.

All good to start with. I wouldn't dive into string theory before you have a good grounding in some of the basics!
