PhysX Accelerators worth it?

Why do we need these things anyway?

Aren't multi core processors meant to let the computer do stuff like this i.e. couldn't one core run the main thread of the game while the other does the physics stuff?

I thought we're meant to be getting quad core processors by the end of this year (there's one in the PS3 right?).
IF they take off, then you will need one because they are much better at what they do than a CPU. Like graphics, physics has a very high degree of paralellism involved in its computation, so it benefits from dedicated silicon rather than just using an all purpose piece of silicon like a CPU.

Infact the logic used for calculations for physics (in a ppu) is optimised just for that role..so you get a much faster performance/calculations per second and the result is tailored to the task at hand.

Will be usefull if u want to play this F.U.C.K GRAW...

I'll buy one when I can get it for £100 quid and it supports most games out there, until then it's worthless to me.

If only more people were like that, there's too many lemmings who buy the latest gimmick out regardless of whether its actually of any real use or not just because its the "latest e-penis accessory" and this just pushes prices higher and higher as they think they can just keep on getting away with it...

I'm with you brother. :D

Power to the consumers. ;) I went from a 6600GT to an X800 GTO², and just recently to an X1800XT. Every one of them was on an incredible money-off offer when I bought them, too. I never would've upgraded at retail prices and I never buy a "current gen" graphics card because of the gouging that goes on.

These PhysX processors are just a joke at £200, especially considering that only two or three games I remotely like could use the thing. I could buy a top of the range graphics card or a dual-core CPU for that.

Mad choice

If possible to put on a PCI-e card why the heck was this released on PCI. The thinking must have been "I know we'll release this for hard core gamers who have motherboards 3-5 years old, you know the ones who like a real laggy systems". Most people who would consider spending £200plus on extra hardware (at the moment giving only better looking gameplay) will almost certainly by now have motherboards with empty PCI-e(1x) slots and this could have been sold as the perfect next gen product to fill them, instead Ageia chose PCI ,Doh!

Be absolutely mad to do it in PCI-E form as it would kill Crossfire, and SLi in one fell swoop. ;)

Welcome to the forums btw, and to westpig, but if i were you id edit out that sweary (westpig). :)

Thx loadsamoney - my board only has 1 Pci-E 16x slot with a 7800gtx in it. I understand your point but I've got 2 empty PCI-e 1x dare say there are quite a few other people in same 1 GFX card situation

I ran off and had a look at some of the demos using these Ageia cards and the difference appears to be night and day.

I'm converted but not at 200ish bucks although I know some nutters...erm...enthusiasts on here wouldn't hesitate to spend around £1100 on two 7900GTX's and a Physix card.

Yeah they should release these cards on a 1x PCI E format.
As if these take off I'd have to replace my DFI SLI-DR mobo in ordedr to incorporate it.

I far prefer nVidia's Havoc FX approach anyway.
Sounds far more likely to succeed.

When G80 DX10 cards come soon, with DX10 games next year 1 of these cards with a pci-e 1x physx card will easily outperform any current SLI setup  So the decision maybe easier

There also may be a better implementation of a physics engine integrated in a DX10 card and as such PhysX could be rendered obsolete - but that is just speculation....
