physx card

Get the Cellfactor demo, assuming the rest of your rig is upto it, and see what it does for yourself :P

personally I wouldnt buy one, but for 20quid, whos to argue!

“does it make a difference to the games it supports.“
Yes you get new effects that none PPU owners don’t get and you can get a 30% to 60% performance boost depending the game.

Most of the anti PPU people on here are living in the past and refuse to look at the new benchmark numbers, driver updates or games. They all go on about the release drivers which did slow 1 game down. But there have been lots of driver release’s since then. Just like GPU’s improve over time due to drivers so has the PPU.

“It slows some of them down. Does that count?”
Its not done that for months now with driver updates it boost speeds.

DX10 and a whopping great big DX10 capable graphics card. Personally I would not be holding my breath for PhysX games. Problem is that it is rapidly becoming old tech but for £20 you may have actually hit the acceptable price range for it :D

Crysis works on XP in DX9 on a DX9 card, no need to go spending £600 on Vista (which is required for DX10), and £350+ for your DX10 card to just to play spot the difference on Crysis running on DX9/DX10, not gna look that diff, and its only 1x game. :D

yer ive seen a lot of reviews saying its not much use now but give it some time and people will want it or even need it im gona install it this week when the rest of my pc comes, do u know if the albatron geforce 7900gt will run fear oblivian and titan quest ?

Agreed - not gonna spend my hard earned ping to play one game...

All 3 should be ok but Titan Quest with FSAA on will run a little sluggish when in caves but it does that on pretty much every system. Make sure you patch Titan Quest its no where near as bad with the patch. Fear you might have to turn off soft shadows but I believe that’s off by default.

“whats the major benifits if the physx card ?“
Your offloading work from the CPU freeing up the CPU to do other things. This can provide a nice speed boost. Some games add new effects like liquid and cloths effects that are not seen in games without a PPU or when they are used they are simpler versions of cloth. See Bet on:Solider or Cellfactor. Some games don’t add new effects but only use the PPU for speeds boosts City of Heroes is like that you get a large speed boost but no new effects.

Although the PPU is very useful the problem is the lack of games that support it.

so really it allows the cpu and the gfx to work to there potential without them gettin overlogged with jobs to do ? so it does have a use even if people have been slating it

Did you just purchase the card for no reason? It doesn't appear that you know what it is supposed to do.

The PhysX card(or any PPU for that matter) could allow the CPU and graphics card to work to their full potential provided the games are coded to take advantage of them, not all games are and in some cases the PPU card does in fact slow up the game. It isn't clear-cut whether it is worth it or not, the idea is sound but until and unless it is specifically coded for it is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

The ability to see the "Edit" button

I thought you were just being harsh but apparantly it would be valuable if it did :)

It depends how the game use’s the PPU. In COH the PPU takes away jobs from the CPU freeing up the CPU to do other things. So the CPU does not get overlogged with jobs. In other games like Ghost Recon the PPU is offloading work from the CPU but at the same time its making more work for the CPU & GPU as there are more objects on the screen at once.

”so it does have a use even if people have been slating it“
Yes it does have a use a little limited due to the lack of games but it has a use. People where slating it for good reason. When it first came out it slowed down you PC that got fixed but lots of people got in the mind set it slows down you PC and don’t believe its been fixed. Say you’re a big City of Hero’s fan it could well be worth getting a PPU for up to a 60% performance boost. Then again if you don’t play City of Hero’s and only play WoW the PPU would be a waste of money.
