It's enjoyable to do but not easy, compounded by small subjects when the depth of field is so shallow to start with. I've been doing some stacking handheld with off-camera flash but I don't have a diffuser and my macro lens has since died (old Sigma 70mm EF mount with FE mount converter). The stacking is fun as I stick it on manual then using peaking to get my start point then move towards the subject firing a (20fps) burst. This is on an alpha1 with Godox flash/controller.
