I've gotta pick-up family from Gatwick airport in the early hours on Monday.

Was wondering if there are any top tips?

I am commencing internet re-search too.

Whenever I get picked up from Gatwick I always have the wife pick me up from the car rental area. Its easy to find from inside the airport, and its very close to the drop off area so if you follow signs for drop off you should be fine.

I know Gatwick have tightened up on fining people hovering to pick up at the drop off point lately, if you were thinking of doing that (what my regular taxi firm has always done until the last couple of months). I would just park in short stay and wait at arrivals exit personally.

It depends if you want to pay for parking or not. It's free to go to the drop off / pick up area, but obviously you're not allowed to leave your car and you'll get moved on (I just wait until I'm moved on, do a circuit and come back, or wait at the Petrol station round the corner and wait for a text) - but if you want to meet and greet, just go to the short term car park. It's not that expensive.

Don't need to do meet and greet per-se, just pick up from normal pick up point really.

I guess I also need to know what terminal the flight is going too.

Get yourself a maccy d's and sit in the car park there. Is only a minute drive to either terminal from there.

I think they have shut the pick up bit off now so you have to use the short term car park and pay the evil monkeys.

I always get people to go to the car hire / coach pick up point and let them call me when they are there and drive round, MCD's is round the corner.

Gatwick is easy to pickup at. Make sure you know what terminal its at!

Theres a MCDonalds right next to the south terminal so can park there have a coffee and wait for them to ring to say they are on there way out no need to park and pay for that.

But don't wait too long in the maccy d's car park either or you'll get fined... (not sure on the maximum stay, but there is a sign up in the car park and a friend of mine had a fine in the post for staying too long whilst waiting to pick someone up)

They can't fine you if you're sat inside drinking a coffee purchased from them though? Then you just get up and leave when you get the text.

I think you'll find that they can. It's private property so as long as they have appropriate signage they (or their agents - MET) can issue civil enforcement notices for overstaying the permitted time.

Of course, whether such notices are legally enforceable is an entirely different question ( http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?360049-mcdonalds-car-park-gatwick ).

Or just sit in one of the many BP / Shell garages on the roundabouts if you're really worried about getting a ticket, the Shell by the North terminal is a Costa and has lots of parking.

All the taxis wait there
