Well, about 6 weeks ago when i made a thread about buying a new car and you lot all told me not to. i still went and bought one :p got a phone call today saying i can pick it up friday :D \o/ simply can't wait for it. then i got the whole weekend to go cruising :)

got one quick question though. whats usually the best amount of miles before you can err.....go for it. so to speak? its an Astra 1.6 16V engine. i always thought it was about 1000

Take it easy 'til 7-800, then gradually push towards the redline with every 100 past that, until 1000.

Or you could just thrash it from the start and leave it for the next owner to worry about.

lol :) cool, yeh i was thinking not to take it above say 3k RPM till the first thousand or so

You actually bought a BRAND NEW 1.6 Astra?

:( :( :(

Crystal ball predicts 'Want to change my car but the garage is only offering me £6k, how can this be, I paid £14k a year ago' thread in one years time.

Do you not get a sinking feeling every time you look at that missing 5 figure sum in your bank account with only a common or garden bog standard 1.6 litre Astra to show for it?

I'm not being anti Astra, I'd have felt the same had I spent a similar amount on a bog standard 1.8 Mondeo.

Someones got to or what will I buy for my £1000 in 5 years time?

It's ok, Avis Rentacar and ABC Leasing are buying billions of them every 30 seconds. Thats why the residuals on them are so utterly awful.

You can pick up sub 10k mile 6 month old 1.6 Astras for miles under £10k becuase people like Avis de-fleet at 6 months old to get the best residuals.

Or you could buy a new one becuase OMG LOL NEW CAR? SO LEET? MY GOD LOL 06 plate!...

Until September, when it becomes just another used car... :(

lol :D Sorry Phate but you should have taken advice from people on this forum. Getting yourself into so much debt at your age for a car that will be worth significantly less in a years time and no doubt you will be utterly bored with it.

New car's are great because they are spotless and smell nice. That's the only positive thing i can say really. I'd hate to be in your shoes in a years time when you want something decent :(

Only becuase you don't know any better. It feels awesome becuase you are 18, and it's probably only the second or third car you have ever driven and almost certainly by far the quickest.

Thats why everyone on here has the advice to give you - they've a tad more experience, have been where you are, and know what its like. Trust me, you WILL grow bored of, you WILL want to change it within 24 months and you WILL only then realise how much you've screwed yourself over with this purchase.

You'll look back in 10 years time and say 'god, did I REALLY blow 14k on a 1.6 litre Astra? What was I thinking?'

We tried to save you from that before it cost you thousands, and thousands of pounds. You were not interested, so will now learn through experience.

Enjoy your Astra, millions of others do every day. Luckily they've only paid 20 quid a day for the privilage and get to give it back after :p

Let me guess, is it all financed? Did you really have £14k to spend on a car or did the salesman manage to stiff you on a lovely finance package as well?

In two weeks time, your car will be worth £2500 less than is it now and you'll probably owe more its worth. Good luck :(

This isn't really the place to pan someone's purchase. He's asked about running it in, not residual value.

Damn your younger than me, and have to pay finance on a new car! That's going to sting.

But it's your choice and if your happy then who cares what we think. Plus you get new car smell! :p

On the running in, I take it your joking about 3k rpm? My 1.6 focus barely moves til 3.5k rpm, I couldn't stand staying that low for 1k miles.

It's a public discussion forum. People are entitled to post their opinions.

If he really is as happy as he says with his purchase, he wont be feeling deflated by the reception he's getting here. Hopefully someone else will be saved from the same mistake by reading some of the posts here.
