Pick up the car on friday

Except the cost of finance, £18K on regular finance will cost a damn site more then £14K on 0%.. so it will work out cheaper then the Audi.. seems pro-rata a good deal.....

18k is not going on finance buddy, I'm putting down a large deposit, but I will work with your theory for arguements sake.

Erm the actual value of the car is 23k it's just I'm paying 18k therefore once it's lost 7k in 3 years it's worth 16k, I will already have been paying for it for 3 years and paid it off therefore I won't actually technically loose much.

No offence meant to you, I like the A3, and I think you have a good deal.. I was just using the figures as an example.. if Phate had bought your Audi with a similar discount (not that anyone could get that deal any easier).. sorry about the insinuation..

I just saw, A3 2.0T FSI with the Sline pack and a bunch of options.. the list on that as a base car is £19100.. I think yours is more being the sline model, I just can't find the list price on that!!

I think you have make a bit of a mistake in counting the options in on the retained value, this applies only to the list price of the vehicle, options rarely recoup anything near the retained value %, and in most cases only add a marginal amount on at resale, they do however differentiate the car, and make it easier to sell for a good price..

Fair Comments Demon, no offence taken - It's S-Line Special Edition which comes with extra stuff like full leather at no extra cost :D

That's why after speaking to Audi Used Cars they have advised of the options to choose which are good when you come to re-sell..

There is only a total of £600 pounds worth of options on the car anywho.

Anyway enough about me we can talk about this in my thread, this is about Phate and his Astra.

lol dude, you really don't like em do you? :p

They are fine... as cheap cars.

I wouldn't like my car if it was purchased at its original price of £20,000 either. It was a ripoff for £20k. But at under £3k, it makes loads of sense.

You'll look back in 10 years time and say 'god, did I REALLY blow 14k on a 1.6 litre Astra? What was I thinking?'

We tried to save you from that before it cost you thousands, and thousands of pounds. You were not interested, so will now learn through experience.

You wanting this guy to commit suicide? :p

his money
his choice

and unless i'm mistaken this members PREVIOUS thread asked for opinions on buying from new or not...not THIS one.
let him/her have his new toy....if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything.

Well, about 6 weeks ago when i made a thread about buying a new car and you lot all told me not to. i still went and bought one :p got a phone call today saying i can pick it up friday :D \o/ simply can't wait for it. then i got the whole weekend to go cruising :)

got one quick question though. whats usually the best amount of miles before you can err.....go for it. so to speak? its an Astra 1.6 16V engine. i always thought it was about 1000

nope it will still be tighter than virgin at 1,000miles. play it safe, no more than 3500rpm for ~4-6000miles then after that it will no doubt have its first oil change and should be fine for 4500-5000rpm. i most definately would not be thrashing it whilst its still on its first lot of engine oil, think how much swarf there is going to be in it from the engine wearing itself in!!!!!

unless i'm mistaken doesn't the car arrive with "running in" oil in the sump?
this used to be standard practice but i don't know if it still works this way.

Yup - if it's anything like the Golf, which I imagine it will be, then the first lot of engine oil will probably be in there until you hit 20k miles (I.e. first service).

dunno, i assumed it was normal oil that used to get changed at 1500-3000 miles, to remove the swarf from running in. but nowdays they seem to leave it untill the first service interval. the engines not at its best untill about 10,000miles, where it isnt so tight anymore.

unless it's a Golf GTI mk2 in which case it's not loosened up until 70 or 80k miles.

if anyone remembers the top gear ep where they raced 2 identical cars down an airstrip....the one with 100k miles slowly pulled away from the one with 50k miles....really surprising stuff.

ok guys thanks for all the advice, when i get the car ill drive it home slowly and not to over rev it and keep it below 3000rpm and then swallow the handbook and keep you guys posted :)

Now I think I know where penski comes from at times..

I've always been a great advocate of living within or slightly below your means.

Plus, owning cars outright rocks.
