Pick your colour

Yeah, its not going to happen is it. :(

I love my MacBook so much, I would hate to go back to Windows but i'm not sure if I can justify paying out for a MacBook Pro when I can get the same spec from Dell Outlet and save £600+. Obviously it wouldn't be quite as sexy as a MBP and I would have to sacrifice my precious OSX. Decisions decisions...

On the outlet, if you look hard enough you can get a mid to high spec TXXXX C2D, 3/4GB RAM, 17" widescreen, 8600 GT, Vista - for around the £500-£600 mark. That would be the equivalent spec of the top end MBP at £1800. Obviously looks wise it doesn't touch an MBP and to go back to Windows now after using OSX for so long would be a serious kick in the teeth but its difficult to justify the money. But il probably end up spending it. :p

Unless you need the £600 for hookers or life saving surgery I'd save up the extra and pony up for a MacBook Pro. Whilst similar to the Dell on paper, in reality it is a much better computer.

Is the Dell all aluminum? Does it have a light sensitive keyboard? Built in WebCam? MagSafe power? Firewire 800? Multi-touch trackpad? OS X? :D

It isn't always just about money and specs!

Oh and what is all this "Brick" talk on the rumour sites and what does this have to do with new MacBooks in silly Dell style colours. :(

Come on Steve don't lose the plot.

Wireless USB brick?

'Brick' to smash Windows?

Who knows, who cares, it is just a rumour and it is just another hardware company.

I know I know, I don't need that extra stuff really in reality and I suppose I am just trying to be sensible but I know deep down I will be buying a MBP when the new ones come. :( :D

Now while I love my macbook pro, some of those are fairly awful arguments...

£600 for a keyboard you can use in the dark without a light (times I'll *need* that - none)

the built in webcam isn't exactly unusual in the windows world,

Magsafe power is another really nice but not essential and not worth £600 item like the keyboard

Firewire 800 is great but how many people have a compatible drive and a need the extra speed over 400 (come to think of it, isn't 400 getting near the drives performance limit if it's not RAID?)

Multi touch trackpad is a novelty which works in a few apps and isn't exactly compelling, another item to add to the keyboard and magsafe in the 'oh that's nice' list.

Aluminium is nice, mainly as a looks thing though, it's not any tougher than a thinkpad at the end of the day.

OS X - well thats the good reason, it's why I bought one and what stops me going and buying a workstation class Dell for half the money...

How about automatic brightness for the MBP's screen? :p

The Dells such as the M1330 don't have this wonderful feature :p

The MBP has lots of small and nice subtle features which the Windows laptops usually don't offer and they justify the price difference for me as well as OS X :p

Dell make some great computers and if I needed a Windows laptop I'd have a Dell as I have done before. However they don't have that unique experience that owning an Apple product brings (for some at least!)

Why do you think that?

Having owned a few Macs the user experience is just better and worth the extra cash. it's little things like the ports all in one place, the MagSafe power adapter and, of course, OS X. It is hard to pin down exactly.

It was ever so slightly tongue in cheek! ;) :p OS X is the main reason and the overall package as I described above.

Here is a good analogy.

Pay 50p for an banana. Or pay 90p for a pretty much identical banana.

Hmm, I need to think that one over before I make my purchase.

No, because both Apple and Dell are put together solidly and are equally very reliable.

Maybe so but apple products are designed by Jonathan Ive - one of the most celebrated product designers around today - Dell's approach to design is to paint the case silver or black depending 'whats in' and stick some blue led's on it.

That's a pretty unfair analogy, the 50p banana would have to be slightly rotten in appearance in comparison to a 90p ripe banana :p

To those saying that Dell laptops are marginally cheaper than the equivalents offered by Apple, where's the proof? :p

I wouldn't mind other colours but I'd prefer black or white. Maybe green or orange. Not really a fan of all aluminium but it seems inevitable with all the other lines being so.

Also I hope the new MBPs don't look too much like the Air, as thin is good but all pointy etc is not so good :(

I want it quite boxy shape-wise, with some rounded edges like they are now...
