howdy all. first time i've been in this forum i think. *waves*

anyhoo, my host of 2 years went kaputt the other day and so i'm on the lookout for a new place to put my website.

Having had a solid reliable and cheap host for two years, i've not been looking at any other packages - so i'm quite out of the loop so to speak.

My old host cost me around £35 a year, with a very flexible 5gb space limit and 5gb transfer, nameserver, pop3 email, plesk control panel. Now i know that was very cheap, and i'm not likely to get a deal as good as that - but i don't need one.

My space requirements hover around the 1-2gb kinda mark, and bandwidth rarely went the large side of 1gb/month.

I need a couple of SQL databases (could live with one.. i guess) ASP/ASP.net would be useful for dev work but is not needed, php is needed but that goes without saying nowadays eh.

Sooo, anyone help me out here - or point in the right direction so i can have a mooch about myself?

Thanks guys and gals.

cheers, i'm looking on that site at the mo. a lot of info to take in there though. am working on it :)

ok, just looked at dreamhost.. am i reading this right..

200gb space
2 TB / month
Unlimited SQL

all on the basic package.. for $9.95 a month?! or $7.95 if i sign up for two years

blimey that's cheap!!

i dont need all that space.. but $7.95 a month! hehe.

like i said asp is not essential, i can work local for that.

I just signed up to dreamhost and theyre great!
Look in the host review sticky for promocodes
The bandwidth increases 16GB/week and hdd space increases 1GB/week on the lowest package.
Theyre in america though, so a tiny bit slow

Fair enough, but you have to understand that simply going for the big numbers, they've reeled you in like a fish. :p

true but if they're relaible.. then the big numbers are a bonus. ive not signed up yet, still researching.

Iirc A List Apart and Zeldman are hosted by Dreamhost so they must be pretty good.

I recommend Tsohost personally.

Dreamhost aren't like other oversellers, to be fair, and they're certainly no fly-by-night. I've been with them two years (the first year of which cost me $9.95) and I've not regretted it for a moment.

Even setting aside the quite frankly insane disk space and bandwidth, there are few hosts out there who offer the goodies Dreamhost do and even fewer at this price point—SSH, Subversion, WebDAV, Jabber, choice of PHP4 and PHP5, etc. etc. etc.

I too am with Vidahost. Great hosting. I get every email answered, a fast server, guys who know what they're doing, and on a UK server.

but, if you need XXGBs of storage and don't mind american hosting ... then dream has a good reputation on this forum.

I wouldn't advise going with Dreamhost. I've not had first hand experience but I've heard several stories. Basically, if your looking for somewhere to host a small site that doesn't use up too many resources (CPU) then that's great but the second your site starts using a few % of CPU then they'll suspend your account.

Check out webhostingtalk.com caus that's where you'll find the most reviews on hosts and a load of knowledgeable people.

I, personally, host with Eoshosting.com because they're in the UK and a good friend referred them to me.

They stopped doing that aaaaaages ago, and even then it wasn't a hard-and-fast rule.
