Picking up new car

To be fair if it had arrived 2 weeks ago I'd have not been bothered and just picked it up on a 73 plate.

It's the fact they said multiple times when I was ordering "If you want to wait for a new reg then we've got this order already in that we can give you" and the fact I'm not physically in a position to pick it up until the weekend which even the sales guy said yesterday "It'll have to be the first weekend of March to pickup as I know you're not available in the week".

Basically the way they've gone about it has annoyed me in my sleep deprived overworked state :D

But this car is brand new, not a decade old.

The difference will only be £200-300 but that's probably not worth throwing away is it?

It's not going to stay new though, unless the two people in this thread saying they're delaying registration by a few weeks to get a later plate are flipping exotic cars (if they were even allowed based on the contracts high end car manufacturers have you sign). £300 is a drop in the ocean considering the value it'll instantly drop by as soon as they drive it off the forecourt.

Not referring to the OPs car here by the way considering he physically can't collect the car.

It's still £300.

I don't know what car the original poster has bought but picking an entirely random normal car, a Seat Leon and putting it through one of the free valuation tools actually shows a value that is £1000 higher for a March 2021 than exactly the same car registered in February 2021. This is a significant difference - it's absolutely pointless I agree as they are both exactly the same car and probably built on the same day, but the market dictates the pricing and the market values a March 2021 car materially higher than an identical February 2021 car.

As these cars get older the difference will reduce until such time as it'll make no difference, but after the typical ownership duration of a brand new car the difference remains significant.

You'd need a really good reason to take delivery of a brand new car on the last day of February instead of March!

You were close, it's a Seat Ibiza.

All sorted, funnily enough "I'll take it on a 24 plate or not at all" put the discussion to bed pretty quickly

I feel as though had the salesman/person been more upfront about their situation, i.e. wanting the sale in their Feb slot, that you’d have been more inclined to try.

At least, I would have - date doesn’t really matter to me. But lying doesn’t sit well with me.

100% I'd have been happy to work with him if he really needed it this month to hit a target or whatever if 1. He'd started a discussion and not effectively tried to demand it and 2. He'd sweetened the deal a little.

My GR86 was ready in middle/end of August and there was no problem waiting for the 73 plate. This was through Toyota's buy online though so the dealers don't really have any say in the matter.

Dealerships are an endangered species though so they cannot be pushy like they used too.

They're car sales people what do you expect.
My conversations when I'm buying a car is basically to shut them down of their tactics or I walk, not interested in the hard sell or any of the nonsense extras.
I know what I want you just need to play on your computer and get it me. Not done a new car in a long time but telling them im not interested in the PDI either is always fun.

The best experience I ever had was actually at the Mazda garage the guy just listened to me and we were done in no time. At a Ford garage they ignored my request tried to sell all that fabric guard ceramic coating, I just got up and walked off. Ended up buying the car from Motorpoint instead, who were surprisingly good.

To be fair during the initial visit when I ordered that's exactly what I did, I wanted this car in this trim with this gearbox and I'm not bothered on colour, got the figures and told them if they threw in gap insurance and two years servicing I'd be happy.

All done, nice and easy. They threw in the colour guard type stuff as well without ever trying to sell me it. So yeah the first interaction was spot on.

Tell them to wait. At work the last new car I ordered arrived at the dealer on 2nd January when it was due on 14th march! Dealer rang up to arrange us taking delivery. Told him we didnt want it until March. He was happy. No our fault the expected build time was slashed from ordering.

Why do people care so much about the number on the plate? It doesn't change the age of the metal underneath and the car's mileage will dictate its re-sale value, not its age from registration. It really boggles my mind.
I don't really care at all

But if I was 2 weeks from the new plates coming out, I would probably wait.

Anything more than that, nah.

Its not as much as a thing when there was only one age change per annum but it still affects its resale value until it gets really old. Just being one day newer can make a £1000 difference to what somebody will pay you for it when you get rid. Which is why you can get some good bargains if you buy a new car in Feb as opposed to March. I once got £6k off a car if I would register it as Feb instead of 1st March which is when it was ordered for. The salemans told me it was something to do with it would mean the deal hit their next target for the number of cars sold that quarter which meant they got an an extra 2.5% discount on every car sold which was worth a lot more than the £6k they were offering me.

If you were hung up on plate dates, rereg it to an NI reg, they are much more dateless.

Doesnt make the car worth £1000 more when you come to sell it though.............

Honestly, unless there was several grand thrown into the deal, no way would I be taking a new car delivery in the last week or two in February. The dealer knows that as well.
