Piledriver 8350/ROG 890fx

I just upgraded from a 1055T (@ 3.8GHz) to a 8350 (currently still finding my feet with regards to OCing, so currently @4.2GHz) and I've been less than impressed with it.
If I had my time over I think I'd either stick with the 1055T or switch to Intel (if I felt like spending a bit more money). Getting the 8350 seems li8ke false economy now.

This is of course purely my opinion and I'm sure others are quite happy with their 8350.

I'm surprised to hear this, every review I've read on 8350 has been 5/5 and absolutely stunning, some people have said that it tears phenoms apart and even competes with some high end intels in some respects :o

Like I say, it's only my opinion.

Video encoding did improve, but not by as much as I'd hoped given 2 extra cores, 400MHz faster per core and a newer architecture. Maybe a 20% increase in speed. Using my i7 laptop running at under 3GHz even with Turbo on I can encode faster (although that is using the IGP with the Handbrake BETA).

Tricky to tell with gaming as the only things I've tested are Heaven 4.0 (no difference), Black Ops 2 (both hit fps cap) and Guild Wars 2 (33% drop, if not more).

Maybe I should run the Metro 2033 benchmark, not sure if that uses the CPU much.

Only game I play is WoW really :P which is heavily cpu dependent, may be worth it for me :p

I would expect the 8350 is a fair upgrade for some, not so for others. Would seriously consider it as an upgrade myself, but I am AMD bias so that blurs my vision a touch. Apparently though it is not worth upgrading from phenoms to this at the minute.

Especially as it seems your Phenom is running at 4.5GHz!! Mine was only 3.8GHz (although admittedly I've also not currently got a big OC on my FX, in fact it's barely OC'd at all).

Not so much, WoW is CPU dependant in that it wants core for core performance.

If you run your Phenom II at 4.5GHZ and run your CPU NB at 3GHZ and it's not throttling, the chances are you may actually pretty identical results with a higher clocked FX83.

The thing is, Piledriver has lower IPC performance than the PIIs, so apps that don't make full use of all the cores will either have no performance difference, or lower. It's only multithreaded apps that you will see an improvement (and this is the area which can compete with Intel in a similiar price bracket).

As for WoW, I don't think it's that well multithreaded is it? Either way a 8350 probably won't give any extra performance. If you really want to upgrade then an i5/i7 or AMD's upcoming Steamroller should be better.

EDIT: Sheesh and a load of replies appears as soon as I hit the "Post Reply" button :p.

pretty sure wow is single threaded :O and ooh, not heard of that steamroller one yet? I was thinking i7 haswell if I saved, but that may be overkill for gaming :P I do fold a lot as well

If the motherboard supports bulldozer it will work with piledriver. However it will be dependent on the bulldozer support. Expect having to manually set clocks and put up with improperly working power management.

And in instances where newer instruction sets net gains.
Maybe in the DX11 patch in WoW they've done something with instruction sets, explains the PD/BD besting Phenom II.
