Well, I have now been diagnosed with one of these so this is not a request for medical advice. I know it is reasonably rare, but I'd imagine others on here have had experience with it. I have got a referral and it looks like surgery is pretty common. Who has gone through this? TBH I'm not looking forward to it, especially the time off work if it comes to it. I have three accounting exams in November and this could potentially delay my qualification by 6 months :(

P.S don't google it if you just have, or currently are eating :p

edit.. forgive the spelling, it should be Pilonidal

...and too think, Pilonidal translates from Latin to 'nest of hair' which makes it sound so nice and inviting. I'd advise getting yourself one of those blow up 'doughnut' cushions pretty soon.

don't google it whilst eating.. or at work.. or wish to keep your sanity.. or not wish to pluck your eyes out with a rusty spoon after... OH GOD DON'T GOOGLE IT.

on a serious note.. I know someone who had one of these. Surgery was nothing more than a lance and slice, recovery nothing more than having to sit funny for a few days.

I had this and ofc the operation to remove it. If im honest its really nothing, i was out of hospital after 1 night and back to work the following day Although depending on where yours is it can be worse. Luckily for me mine was right at the top and very small when they found it. I had the operation known as a half cleft which is the newest operation they do for it. the only down side is that you lose some of you bum if you get me like the top bit they stitch together which isnt bad, the only big problem i can think of is really for about a week it hurts to do a no.2, if you need anymore information email me in trust :)

Lol, I need a new chair at work I think! Glad to hear the person you know got over it quick DJ, the last thing I want is to be laid up for 3-4 weeks.

Oh god. I expected google pictures of people's noses!

No advice or words of wisdom, sorry! I'm sorry you have it! :/

It does hurt to sit so i have been taking some neurofen and am on some penicillin for a while.

It's really no big deal for the most part. Usually in and out of hospital in 24hrs, and I give 1-2 weeks sick note depending on what the punter wants. To give you an idea of how quick the op is, the last one I assisted with I was called to theatre and by the time I'd scrubbed and gowned up, the only thing left to do was close the incision lol

There are a few recognised complications, which I'm sure your surgeon will go through with, but everyone I've spoken to who's had it done has been pleased they did on balance

[hope that's not over the line of med advice]

As I have said, I have already been advised what to expect by my GP, and it's hard to get an idea from the internet of what real world cases are like, more because you only hear the bad news in online forums.

As far as I can tell, if it has been caught early, it should be a quick recovery, so this is what I am hoping for.

You have made me feel better about it though.

Please people, stop saying "don't google it". That makes me curious, and then I google it! I probably would've glanced over this thread if you hadn't told me not to google it :( :p

A "friend" of mine had one, and the hole they created wasn't insignificant. It was stitched after surgery but the when the stitches came out the wound opened up again as fresh as the day it was created. This isn’t uncommon apparently because the nature of the wound means it doesn’t heal easily or quickly.

I… *cough*, I mean they had to visit the nurse everyday, including weekends for about 6 weeks to get the hole “packed”, it was very painful for the first three of those.

Jokes aside it was a massive pain in the arse.

I had a number of these and only after the third abcess did they rectify the situation.

Unfortunately the last abcess grew to the size of an egg and was incredibly painful - nothing I have had since or had before has compared to it.

It was an overnight op, involving having an epidural as well as a general. Epidurals are not kind for men and be warned it takes longer for the feeling to come back to some places than others.

After that it was approximately 6 weeks of wound packing - this is essential to heal the wound properly. They basically cut out all the area and then fold the skin over but they will leave a drain in. After that the nurse will come out (or when you can walk you can go to the surgery) and repack the wound.

I was advised to have a bath before she came round and tease the previous packing out. Its some sort of fibrous material that turns to a sort of gelatinous material. This packing allows the wound to heal from the ends of the tunnel without creating a cavity.

Happy to answer any questions on what its like :)
