Some clarification

Pimax Play and EVO are free — and staying free

We've seen some worry going around that EVO is the start of Pimax putting features behind a paywall. It's not, so I want to address it directly.

Pimax Play has always been free, and that isn't changing. EVO is free as well. (For example, Sboys3's work is GPLv2 (including everything that Pimax helps to make it happen).

The main reason EVO exists is to give us a place to ship more experimental stuff — features that aren't necessarily ready for the mass market, but that we think PCVR enthusiasts will actually want to play with. It's a testing ground: a way for us to try new things, get real feedback from the people who care most, and improve the experience faster. That's the entire point. It only works if it's open to everyone.

On the paid feature part: Third-party tools and integrations may be paid. That's on the third parties, not us. To be clear, this does not mean Pimax will start charging for its own features — we won't. But we want to keep the door open to integrating outside tools down the line, and some of those could cost money. If that ever happens, our strong preference is a one-off payment, not a subscription. Seasoned PCVR users can imagine what type of companies or services would be paid (but I don't want to drop examples here and have people speculate).

So, short version: Pimax's own software stays free, EVO included. Any paid thing you ever see would be an optional third-party add-on, clearly labeled as such.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

I think it depends what the features are...

If say there is a paywall that gives you SteamVR motion smoothing/compensation then that could be worth paying for as its a solution to the poor implementation Pimax currently has. Of course it depends on the price.

We also don't know how 3rd parties are being compensated, its not unreasonable for Sboys3 to get something for their efforts.

We need more information and clarity I think to judge the situation.
