Pimax Dream Air...

Any chance you will be getting the MeganX MK2? Would be good to see how tis compares to the dream air for sim racing. Maybe now you're a bona fide youtuber they will send you a loaner???
Also looking forward to the Pico space pro
I can ask them but I wouldn’t hold my breath

I'm not a sim racer but I'm one of the few here that has (had) a MeganeX Mkii (and a BSB2e) and now have a Dream Air.

Very long story short but I tried 3 units of the MegX and every single one had a faulty fan! (weird pulsing/ clicking fan noise). So it went back obviously.

Fan issue aside - Although the MegX is 'good', sort of, The Dream Air (I have the SLAM version) is superior in every single way, apart from vertical field of view if I was trying hard to be fair.

The lenses of the Dream Air are leagues ahead in terms of glare, sweetspot and overall clarity and consistency of image, and the panels themselves are just better all round too. The diopter adjusters of the MegX, although on paper sound good I found to be really bad in practice, as I was just constantly micro tweaking thinking I could/ should be getting a better image.

The Dream Air is one of the best purchases I've ever made. If you knew me you'd know that was significant as I'm not exactly Mr positive, and don't say these kind of things often! I've also had fantastic customer support from Pimax when I had a weird software issue (raised black levels in all games due to open composite ******* things up), so all the bad stuff you hear about Pimax should be taken with a pinch of salt to some degree.

Well, with the price of the Steam Frame, it's certainly made the Pimax Dream Air a lot more appealing to those sitting on the fence. Big Screen said they noticed a big jump in sales of their BSB 2 since the Steam Frame release on Monday. I am sure the Dream Air and other headsets have had a rise in sales numbers too.

Aye, the Steam Frame has missed the mark by a country mile for me and many. I knew it would with those specs at that price.

Saying that, the BSB2 is awful though compared to the full fat Dream Air. I found the lenses and panels woeful. It's a pity the Dream Air SE went for the same parts, Pimax could have had an absolute winner if better lower res but still 'cheap' OLED panels existed.

I wouldn't recommend it if it was poop

yeah, I keep reading about the BSB 2 and the Pimax Dream Air Se having the same lenses and the same problems and that's the reason why I am not even considering either.

Not sure what Pimax would have done though to make the Dream Air Se better, it's the pancake lenses with OLED displays that are the problem. Maybe they should have considered Mini LEDs. I am still surprised that very few manufacturers have even considered them.

yeah the BSB2E isn't anywhere near the full fat Dream Air but it's still a decent headset let down by glare! I should be getting an SE soon for review apparently

Would be very interested to read/watch your review of the SE. Might be a Black Friday/Christmas purchase. I really would like a decent OLED headset with Pancake lenses.

Interesting. How do you find the tracking? Reviews I have watched have said it is pretty poor, with fast games like Beat Saber being unplayable. It also frequently loses your play area setup.

Apparently a recent firmware update overdrives the panel to increase brightness but this adds significant motion smear. Will be interesting to hear how you find it, especially compared to the premium model.

@IT Troll

I find the tracking absolutely fine on the Dream Air Slam, if using Pimax Play or Evo (SBoys3 driver is a bit jittery with it at the moment, which is worth being aware of but I've no doubt it will improve.)

I also have a Crystal Light though and always found the tracking on that great tbh, so I was hoping it would be the same/ as good on the Dream AIr SLAM - and it is.

I think your room and immediate environment probably have an effect on SLAM tracking and for whatever reason mine is good, even though I have controlled low light almost all the time. I don't play silly games like Beat Saber though ;) so maybe if you play really fast stuff it might not be up to your needs?

One gripe is it does often lose the play space a bit and you have to do the quick room setup. This is the one annoying thing, but I'm sure that can be sorted out with software.
It's worth noting too though - I had lighthouse tracking for the short time I had the MeganeX (obviously) and I actually had way more issues with that! It would often 'lose' a controller or head tracking and just spaz out vs the Pimax's. And I'm blessed (or cursed?) with youthful hearing perception apparently - I found the high pitched whine (many can't hear it) from lighthouses almost unbearable so I was really keen to not have any and go SLAM again.

Regarding the increased brightness on the Dream Air SE. Given it's the same "Seeya" OLED panels as in the BSB2 it will use the exact same method as the 'overdrive' function on the BSB2 software. Yes it increases brightness a good amount, but the persistence and ergo motion blur is just fucki9ng awful and I would consider it unusable. It's truly bad. It also made the fan run at 100% on the BSB2, which was awful. The Dream Air (full fat and SE) design and chassis has way better airflow than the BSB2 so fan noise might be ok with that. I'd also add, after really stringent testing I came to the conclusion that the Pimax Crystal Light is a much better headset than the BSB2. Even though I'm an OLED snob, I think these Seeya panels in the BSB2/ SE are just rubbish. The Crystal Light QLEDS have a much better colour reproduction and with the higher res panels and excellent aspheric lenses it is noticeably sharper too. Local dimming with QLED is also 'ok' in darker scenes sometimes, but compared to the proper full fat Dream Air Sony OLED panels.......my lord...........it's a night and day difference all round for everything! You get what you pay for is an old but true adage.

I also have to say - fan noise and fan issues are not talked about enough when it comes to VR headsets. The BSB2e I had had a terrible fan buzzing noise that would kick in often and the only way to fix it was to remove the face gasket and slam it back in - a 'known' issue if you look it up. And as mentioned above I tried 3 (******* 3 !!!) MeganeX headsets that all had this weird fan fault noise issue. My Dream Air fans are perfectly fine and the way it handles thermals and noise is waaaaaay underrated given its size and what it pumps out visually, and my Crystal Light is even better (totally silent), so go figure.

Thanks for taking the time to post that. I have found very few reviews of the SLAM version as most cover the lighthouse version which came out first. YouTuber Naysy has a review of the SLAM and she is pretty damning about the tracking, which really put me off. Especially as the Reverb I had previously wasn’t known for great tracking.

I’ve only played Beat Saber a couple of times. Not really my thing either, but a useful torture test for tracking performance.

Interesting that Valve seem to have nailed SLAM tracking with the Frame, and with ringless controllers too, on their first attempt, but Pimax still haven't got it right.
