MS, Activison, Eidos, EA, Vivendi, etc. All are publishers out to get your money

By and large, MS are one of the best publishers because they don't put obtrusive anti-piracy stuff in any of their software. The worst they do is put in activation in (which is nowhere near as bad as its made out - and yes I've had to phone them to activate again). I have a series of games that won't work on my secondary PC without unofficial mods, due to copy protection. All the games published by MS work fine

Either way, I fear I have gone off on one of my tangents that ends in me recommending consoles for their ease of use with gaming

Seriously though, MS aren't a big bad corporation. They are much worse ones out there. Given MS' size they could put a world of hurt on the computer community at large, fortunately they don't. Thats not to say record labels also don't put the hurt on, they kinda do.
