Ping and latency

Sometimes when im playing css online i join a server and my latency is around 30 to 40 but my ping is high and i get kicked and stuff?
how can i lower my ping? is it my computer or internet connection?

Latency is the same as ping (in networking).

Lowering your ping mainly comes down to the distance between your house and the location of the server you are playing on.

so its nothing really to do with having a bad computer or a slow internet connection?
not that my inet is slow cuz i play cod4 on ps3 online easy all the time no problems

Could be the servers you play on i get with some bf2142 servers.

Most people have a high ping when they join the CSS server, waiting maybe 30secs gives it time to drop to your actual ping.

I find that servers are a little aggressive when kicking out high pingers and don't give people who join a chance sometimes.

Yeah :/ tis funny cos I never get it playing TF2 but I played CSS the other day for the first time in ages and got kicked for high ping :| Ive got cable

Sometimes when I go to join a COD4 server, it won't let me in because 'This server is for low ping players only'. I'll just bring down the console and type /reconnect and it lets me in everytime. Sad thing is once I do get in, my ping is always in the low 20's.
